Mason Greenwood's Transfer to Fenerbahce: A New Chapter in Istanbul

Mason Greenwood’s turbulent spell at Marseille is over. His next act will play out in Istanbul, in front of one of the most demanding crowds in European football.

Fenerbahce have struck a deal worth €39m to prise the 24-year-old away from the south of France, a move Marseille describe as the product of a “joint discussion” and a mutual decision. For a player who divided opinion off the pitch but rarely on it, the end came quickly once it became clear he wanted out.

Marseille cash out at the peak

Greenwood arrived at the Vélodrome in the summer of 2024 and, in purely football terms, delivered exactly what Marseille had hoped for – and more.

In his debut season he hit 22 goals and six assists in 36 appearances, dragging OM to a second-place finish in Ligue 1 and a return to the Champions League. He followed that with an even heavier haul: 26 goals and 11 assists in 45 games across all competitions in 2025-26. Those numbers pushed him into the conversation for the UNFP Player of the Season, where he finished among the five finalists.

On the pitch, the picture was clear. Technical quality, sharp movement, end product. One of the standout forwards in France.

Off it, the story was far less smooth. Reports of disciplinary issues and tension with former sporting director Medhi Benatia never truly went away, and the club’s hierarchy ultimately chose the hard-nosed route: sell while his value is at its highest.

In an official statement, Marseille thanked Greenwood “for his two seasons with the club” and wished him success, the tone polite but businesslike. The real context came from new sporting director Grégory Lorenzi, speaking in his first press conference.

“I think you all know the complexities of the Greenwood deal with the image of the player,” Lorenzi said. “There weren’t a lot of opportunities with Mason, but I want to be precise when I say that the player wanted to leave the club as quick as possible.

“The numbers are communicated by people that don’t have the right information. All I can say is that the club got what it wanted. Okay, we thought that more clubs were going to knock on the door. So the best option was this club that the player absolutely wanted to go to.”

The message was blunt: options were limited, Greenwood was determined to go, and Marseille took the best firm offer on the table.

Atletico snubbed, Fenerbahce pounce

The road to Turkey was anything but straightforward. At one stage, Atletico Madrid looked well placed to land the former Manchester United forward, viewing him as a long-term heir to Antoine Griezmann.

Diego Simeone’s side were, by all accounts, leading the chase. Then the talks imploded.

Atleti reportedly felt “disrespected” by the lack of communication from Greenwood’s camp in the final stages of negotiations. For a club that prides itself on clarity and control, that was enough. The deal collapsed.

Fenerbahce did not wait for a second invitation. Sensing the opening, the Istanbul giants moved decisively to close an agreement with Marseille: €39m, spread over three years in equal instalments. For Turkish football, that figure is a statement. For Fenerbahce, it is a bet that Greenwood’s goals can tilt the domestic balance of power back in their favour.

A new focal point in Istanbul

Greenwood has signed a four-year contract and is expected to become the focal point of Ismail Kartal’s attack. The club have not been shy about the scale of their ambition, and neither has the player.

“It was a no-brainer when they were interested in me,” Greenwood said in an official video message to Fenerbahce supporters. “It’s the biggest club in Turkey and I can’t wait to get started.”

He arrives with a track record of adaptation. He has already found his feet in La Liga with Getafe and then in Ligue 1 with Marseille, reshaping his career in two very different football cultures. Now comes a fourth major European league, in one of the sport’s most fevered environments, with expectation roaring down from the stands.

Marseille walk away with a sizeable fee and a clean break from a complex saga. Fenerbahce walk into a new season with a marquee signing and a clear idea: build the attack around Mason Greenwood and let the noise of Kadıköy do the rest.
