Nou Camp Chosen for 2029 UEFA Champions League Final
The 2029 UEFA Champions League final will be held at Barcelona's newly renovated Nou Camp, ending a 30-year wait for the iconic stadium to host the event again. This decision came from UEFA's Executive Committee, which selected the venue over bids from London's Wembley Stadium and Borussia Dortmund's Westfalenstadion.
Wembley and Dortmund Overlooked
Wembley Stadium, reopened in 2007, has been the site of three European Cup finals, including the most recent in 2024. Despite its rich history with the tournament, Wembley lost out to the Spanish venue as it vies to host the final for another time.
The Westfalenstadion in Dortmund, which has never hosted the Champions League final before, also failed to secure the 2029 match despite its bid.
Nou Camp’s Renovation and Legacy
The Nou Camp is undergoing extensive renovations, transforming into the Spotify Camp Nou, focusing on fan experience, technology, accessibility, and modern services. Barcelona president Joan Laporta expressed pride in this choice, calling it an international recognition of the stadium’s new status.
The stadium last hosted the European Cup final in 1989 when AC Milan won, and it also evokes memories of the dramatic 1999 final where Manchester United claimed victory in the closing moments against Bayern Munich, completing their treble.
Wembley’s Continued Role in European Soccer
Though Wembley missed out on the 2029 final, it remains a pivotal venue in European football. Apart from hosting three Champions League finals, Wembley was central during Euro 2020, staging the final and semi-finals after the tournament was delayed by a year due to the pandemic. It is set to be a key site again for Euro 2028, which will take place across the UK.
Other Upcoming Finals Announced
UEFA also confirmed that the 2028 Champions League final will take place at Munich’s Allianz Arena, which recently hosted the 2023 final where Paris Saint-Germain defeated Inter Milan. This marks the third time in 16 years the Allianz Arena will host the final, matching Wembley's record since its redevelopment.
This season’s final is scheduled for Madrid’s Metropolitano Stadium, marking its second time hosting after Liverpool's win over Tottenham Hotspur in 2019.
