Patrick Vieira Appointed Head Coach of Senegal National Team

Patrick Vieira has been named head coach of Senegal, handing the former Arsenal captain his first international job and bringing him back to the country of his birth.

The Senegalese federation confirmed the appointment in a brief statement, announcing: “Mr Patrick Vieira is the new coach of the Senegalese national A team,” and adding that the date of his official presentation and the details of his installation will follow. The note closed with a simple message: “Welcome to Senegal, coach.”

Vieira steps in after Pape Thiaw’s dismissal, which followed Senegal’s exit to Belgium in the last 32 at this summer’s World Cup. Thiaw’s departure opened the door for a high-profile replacement; the federation has now turned to a man whose playing career was defined by leadership on some of the biggest stages.

Born in Senegal but raised in France, Vieira became a dominant figure in the Premier League with Arsenal, winning three league titles under Arsène Wenger and captaining the “Invincibles” side. On the international stage he lifted the World Cup with France in 1998 and the European Championship in 2000, cementing his status as one of the defining midfielders of his generation.

His coaching path has been varied and demanding. Vieira started out with New York City in Major League Soccer before returning to Europe to take charge of Nice. He then moved to England for a two-year spell at Crystal Palace, where he was sacked in March 2023. Strasbourg hired him as head coach later that year, and after that stint he joined Genoa in Serie A, leaving the Italian club last November.

Now 50, Vieira arrives in Dakar with a heavyweight résumé and a fresh challenge. The question is simple and sharp: can a World Cup winner on the touchline turn Senegal’s recent frustration into a new era of deep tournament runs?
