Real Sociedad Secures 2-0 Victory Over Levante in La Liga

Real Sociedad tightened their grip on a European qualification battle with a controlled 2-0 victory over struggling Levante at Reale Arena in La Liga’s Regular Season - 30 round. In a match that underlined the gap between a side chasing continental football and one mired in a relegation dogfight, Pellegrino Matarazzo’s team combined patience, set structure and superior quality in the final third to claim a deserved win.

Starting the day sixth on 41 points, Real Sociedad knew that three points would strengthen their position in the race for European spots. Levante, 19th with 26 points and firmly in the survival battle, arrived in San Sebastian needing a result to chip away at a dangerous deficit. Instead, they left empty-handed and outplayed.

The tone was set early by a spiky opening quarter of an hour. At 15 minutes, tempers flared on the left flank and referee Alejandro Muñiz Ruiz reached for his pocket twice in quick succession. Manuel Sánchez was booked for Levante for unsportsmanlike conduct, and moments later Ander Barrenetxea received the same punishment for Real Sociedad. Two minutes later, the visitors’ back line was further compromised when Matias Moreno went into the book for a late challenge on the edge of his own box.

Real Sociedad, who would finish with 60% possession and 18 total shots, increasingly pinned Levante back. The breakthrough arrived on the half-hour mark from an unlikely source. After sustained pressure and a recycled attack, J. Martin scored, assisted by C. Soler, steering home from close range to make it 1-0. The centre-back’s finish rewarded La Real’s territorial dominance and Soler’s intelligent positioning between the lines.

Frustration grew on the Levante bench, and just a minute later, at 31 minutes, coach Luis Castro was shown a yellow card, underlining the visitors’ sense that the game was slipping away from them.

Levante tried to reset at the interval. As the second half began, Castro made a double change at 46 minutes. P. Martinez came on for I. Losada, adding fresh legs in attacking midfield, while A. Matturro came on for M. Moreno, who was already on a booking, in an attempt to stabilise the defence.

The visitors’ aggression did not abate. At 54 minutes, forward C. Espi was booked for roughing after a clumsy aerial challenge on the halfway line, another sign of a team chasing shadows. Still, Levante did carry some threat, forcing Álex Remiro into four saves across the afternoon, a tally that matched Levante’s four shots on target and confirmed the statistical consistency of the contest.

On 59 minutes, Castro rolled the dice again with another double substitution. I. Romero came on for K. Tunde to provide more direct running in the forward line, while U. Raghouber came on for O. Rey to inject energy in central areas. Yet Real Sociedad remained largely in control, managing space well and picking their moments to accelerate.

Matarazzo’s own changes came just after the hour mark to keep the intensity high. At 63 minutes, P. Marin came on for A. Barrenetxea, who departed on a yellow card, and one minute later B. Mendez came on for L. Sucic, adding creativity and goal threat between the lines. The back line was freshened at 69 minutes when A. Elustondo came on for D. Caleta-Car.

Levante’s final attacking throw came at 81 minutes, when T. Abed came on for V. Garcia, but it was Real Sociedad’s substitutes who would settle the contest. Just two minutes later, the hosts struck again with a move that showcased their depth. At 83 minutes, B. Mendez scored, assisted by P. Marin, finishing calmly from inside the area after a neat combination on the right. Both scorer and provider had come from the bench, underlining Matarazzo’s game management.

Real Sociedad then used their remaining changes to close the game down. At 85 minutes, I. Aguirre came on for B. Turrientes to add fresh legs in midfield, while O. Oskarsson came on for G. Guedes to stretch Levante on the counter. There was still time for one final booking: at 87 minutes, J. Martin received a yellow card, a minor blemish on an otherwise excellent afternoon for the defender who had opened the scoring.

Statistically, the 2-0 scoreline was backed up by the underlying numbers. Real Sociedad generated 2.72 expected_goals to Levante’s 0.28, fired 5 shots on goal and saw 4 efforts blocked, while limiting the visitors to just 8 total shots and a single blocked attempt. Mathew Ryan’s 3 goalkeeper saves kept the margin respectable, but Levante never truly looked like overturning the deficit.

In the wider context, Real Sociedad’s victory moves them to 44 points, improves their goal difference from +1 to +3 (48 goals for, 45 against), and consolidates their place in the European qualification battle. For Levante, the defeat leaves them on 26 points, with their goal difference worsening from -14 to -16 (34 goals for, 50 against), deepening their relegation worries as the season’s run-in looms.
