Rodri Reflects on Barcelona Debut in Commanding Win Over Athletic Club
Rodri expressed his joy after finally stepping onto the pitch for Barcelona in a strong 2-0 La Liga win against Athletic Club at Camp Nou. The midfielder, who joined from Manchester City this summer, featured as part of Hansi Flick's squad that kept their perfect start to the league intact.
Raphinha and Fermin Secure Victory
The hosts controlled the match from start to finish, fielding a youthful lineup including four teenagers. It was the experienced Raphinha who opened the scoring in the 37th minute, skillfully finishing after a precise pass from Pedri. The Basque goalkeeper Unai Simon had to make several key saves throughout the night to keep his team in the game.
The second goal came late when Fermin Lopez took advantage of a poor clearance by Aymeric Laporte, calmly slotting home after a dangerous cross from Karim Adeyemi.
Rodri’s Warm Welcome at Camp Nou
When Rodri replaced Raphinha in the 63rd minute, he received a huge cheer from the fans, marking his first appearance after recovering from minor back surgery. The Spain international spoke to DAZN about the moment.
“Very happy to make my debut. Happy with the win. Two for two,” said the 30-year-old. “It’s important to find rhythm and get used to this great team. The first few minutes felt good.”
“It’s been a long summer, longer than usual. I need to get back up to speed quickly. This is where I wanted to be, and I’m happy with how things have worked out. Now it’s time to get to work.”
He also praised teenage teammate Lamine Yamal for bouncing back with strong performance. “Lamine was going through a tough patch, but today he showed his best form. We need that work ethic and consistency because the talent is there, and the goals will come.”
Flick Praises Rodri as Ideal Signing
Manager Hansi Flick was quick to highlight Rodri's immediate impact during his post-match press conference. “Everyone is happy he’s playing for us, playing for Barca,” Flick said. “He’s the perfect player for us and fits perfectly with our football philosophy and style.”
Looking Ahead
Barcelona have started the season with six points from two games. Their next challenge comes on Monday night against Rayo Vallecano. With Rodri now available for selection from the start, Flick gains an important option to add more strength to an already disciplined team.
