Sunderland Sign Thomas Meunier to Kickstart Summer Rebuild
Sunderland have turned to one of European football’s most seasoned full-backs to launch their summer rebuild, landing Belgium defender Thomas Meunier on a two-year deal after his exit from Lille.
At 34, Meunier arrives with a career’s worth of air miles and medals. More than 550 senior club appearances. Title-winning nights with Paris St-Germain. High-pressure spells at Club Brugge, Borussia Dortmund and Trabzonspor. And 83 caps for Belgium, including a place in their 2026 World Cup squad. This is not a signing built on potential. It is one built on know-how.
A statement first move
He is the Black Cats’ first signing of the season, a clear marker of intent after the departures of forward Eliezer Mayenda and homegrown midfielder Dan Neil. Sunderland needed experience, authority and a voice in the dressing room. They have gone out and found one.
Director of football Florent Ghisolfi did not hide his enthusiasm.
"We are delighted to welcome Thomas to Sunderland," he said, stressing how quickly the club sensed Meunier’s enthusiasm for the move. Ghisolfi highlighted a career spent at the top end of the game, both with some of Europe’s heavyweight clubs and on the international stage with Belgium, and talked up the defender’s blend of leadership, professionalism and two-way quality down the flank.
For a squad still learning how to handle expectation, that kind of presence matters.
Experience for a new frontier
Meunier will join up with the rest of the squad in early August, stepping into a side about to feel a different kind of pressure. Sunderland are preparing for European competition for the first time in 53 years. The club has not walked this road in generations; Meunier has lived on it.
He has spent his prime years navigating Champions League nights and title races, understanding the rhythm of playing twice a week against elite opposition. Sunderland’s young core now have someone who has seen it all.
The Belgian is relishing that responsibility.
"I'm very happy to be here and to begin this new chapter in my career," he said. "The Premier League is one of the most competitive and exciting leagues in the world, and it's a challenge I've wanted to experience."
That line matters. After years in France, Germany and Turkey, Meunier has chosen the intensity of English football at a stage when many players of his profile look for comfort, not confrontation.
Europe in their sights
The lure of continental football also played its part.
"When I spoke with the club, I was impressed by the ambition, the project and the desire to keep moving forward," Meunier explained. "Competing in Europe was also a big factor in my decision because, as a player, you always want to test yourself against the best teams and compete for trophies.
"I hope I can bring my experience to the squad, both on and off the pitch."
Sunderland’s hierarchy believe the same. They see a defender who can still influence games in both halves of the pitch, but also a standard-bearer for a group about to discover the demands of juggling domestic and European campaigns.
The club have made their opening move in the market a bold one. Now the question is simple: can Meunier’s arrival help turn long-awaited European nights into something more than just a nostalgia trip?
