Tottenham Signs Andy Robertson on Free Transfer
Tottenham have moved decisively in the summer market, confirming the signing of Scotland captain Andy Robertson on a free transfer after his Liverpool contract expired.
It is the end of a heavyweight chapter at Anfield and the start of an intriguing one in north London.
The left-back, a cornerstone of Liverpool’s recent success and a Champions League and Premier League winner, will officially join Spurs on 1 July after choosing to walk away following 378 appearances for the club. His departure had been on the cards since January, when a proposed move to Tottenham collapsed late on after Liverpool failed to recall Kostas Tsimikas from his loan at Roma.
Back then, the deal died on the runway. This time, it has gone through with clear intent.
New Tottenham head coach Roberto De Zerbi, who has stepped into the role since those winter talks, has wasted no time in making Robertson a key part of his rebuild and has already nailed his colours to the mast.
“Andy is someone I've admired for a number of years and he will bring outstanding technical qualities, experience, leadership and mentality to our team,” De Zerbi said, underlining exactly why Spurs were prepared to wait for their man.
“He is a proven winner at the highest level over a long period and is someone who can be a big player for us, both on and off the pitch. I can’t wait to start working with him and seeing the positive impact he will have on everyone around him.”
For Tottenham, this is more than a smart free transfer. It is a statement about where they intend to go under De Zerbi: a side that wants ready-made pedigree, not just potential, on the flanks.
For Robertson, it is a clean break after years at the heart of Liverpool’s modern renaissance. Now he walks into a new dressing room, a new system, and a club desperate to convert promise into trophies.
The next time he charges down the left in the Premier League, it will not be in red. It will be in white, with a different anthem ringing in his ears and a new set of expectations on his shoulders.
