Vinicius Junior's Transfer Saga: Mourinho's Key Intervention
Jose Mourinho picked up the phone. On the other end, Vinicius Junior, weighing up a move that would have shaken the summer: leaving Real Madrid for Arsenal.
The Brazilian had been at the heart of one of the window’s loudest rumours. Arsenal were ready to go all in. A bid of around €150 million was being prepared, a fee that would have smashed both their own transfer record and the British record. The Gunners were also willing to rip up their wage structure to land the 26-year-old, whose previous deal in Madrid was due to expire next summer.
For a moment, the door looked open. A superstar in his prime, a Premier League giant with money on the table, and a contract situation that made the move at least plausible.
Then came Mourinho’s intervention.
The Portuguese coach, back at the Bernabeu as head coach this summer, has now lifted the lid on what he told Vinicius as the speculation swirled.
“I called him, I told him Vini, where do you want to go? You only know Real Madrid,” Mourinho told El Chiringuito TV. “When you leave, then you'll know what Real Madrid is. Don't go. It's not worth it. I was sure [he would stay] because he is in love with Real Madrid!”
The message was blunt: from Real Madrid, every step is a step down.
Vinicius listened. Instead of pushing for a Premier League adventure, he signed a new, lucrative long-term contract in the Spanish capital, extending his stay to 2032 and stretching his Real Madrid career towards a potential decade and a half.
Arsenal move on. Real Madrid keep their star. And Mourinho, back in the dugout he knows better than most, has already made his presence felt without even stepping onto the touchline.
