Alvarez Considers Arsenal Move as Atletico Stands Firm on Fee
Julian Alvarez’s future has been dragged to the edge of a decision, and the clock is now louder than ever.
Spanish journalist Pedro Morata reports that the forward is set to decide today whether to open full negotiations with Arsenal or stay put at Atletico Madrid. For weeks, the message around Alvarez was clear: if it wasn’t Barcelona, it was nowhere. That red line has faded. Arsenal are now in the conversation – even if the player still has serious doubts and no real desire to return to England.
Right now, Morata describes the situation as finely poised: 55 per cent in favour of remaining in Spain, 45 per cent towards a move to north London. A few days ago, that split didn’t exist. Earlier reports painted a very different picture, one where only Catalonia could tempt him away from Madrid.
Arsenal’s offer – and Atletico’s stance
The shift in Alvarez’s thinking has met a hard financial reality.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Atletico’s director of football Mateu Alemany recently flew to London for face-to-face talks with Arsenal. The Premier League club have already tested Atletico’s resolve with an opening bid of £103 million plus £4m in add-ons.
It was rejected. Atletico have responded with a demand of around £129m, a figure that underlines just how far apart the clubs remain.
There is a twist. Atletico are understood to be ready to negotiate with Arsenal, not least because they are eyeing Viktor Gyokeres as a potential replacement. The desire to reshape the attack is there. The price, however, is not budging easily – especially in light of previous public comments from CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin, who has insisted the club would not accept offers of €150m or even €200m for their top assets.
On the surface, that rhetoric clashes with the current willingness to talk. In reality, it simply raises the stakes. If Alvarez leaves, it will be on Atletico’s terms.
Tension grows in Madrid
While numbers are being traded in boardrooms, the mood around Alvarez on the pitch has darkened.
He was left out of Atletico Madrid’s opening La Liga match, a 2-0 home win over Malaga, and the reaction in the stands was hostile. Chants from sections of the home support turned against him, a clear sign of how quickly a fanbase can sour when a star player’s future hangs in the balance.
Diego Simeone moved to explain the omission.
“We don't believe Julian Alvarez is in the right condition to play or take part for tomorrow's game. Hopefully, over these next four days, he'll make further progress and we'll be closer to where we want him to be,” the Atletico coach said.
Officially, it is about fitness and readiness. Unofficially, the timing has only poured fuel on the speculation that an exit is close. When a player sits out the opener amid intense transfer noise, few believe it is just about conditioning.
Arsenal’s dilemma as deadline looms
All of this leaves Arsenal with a stark choice in the final days of the window.
Do they stretch towards Atletico’s asking price and gamble on a reluctant but elite-level forward who is still torn between staying in Spain and leading the line in north London? Or do they walk away now, accept that the numbers are too high and pivot quickly to alternative attacking targets?
What is clear is that there is no longer time for half-measures. Alvarez is expected to communicate his decision on his future today. If he signals a willingness to join, the pressure flips back onto Arsenal to find a financial package that can move Atletico.
If they cannot, Mikel Arteta will be forced to turn elsewhere in the market – and Alvarez will walk back into a club where the fans have already shown how they feel about uncertainty.
