Arsenal Signs World Cup Winner Misa Rodriguez for Summer Rebuild
Arsenal have added serious weight to their last line of defence, signing Spain goalkeeper Misa Rodriguez on a free transfer in what is their sixth major move of an uncompromising summer.
The 27-year-old arrives from Real Madrid after her contract expired, bringing with her a résumé that reads like a statement of intent. She made 215 appearances in six years for Madrid – a club record – and wore the captain’s armband last season. Now she swaps the white of the Spanish capital for the red of north London, taking the number 16 shirt.
“I’m so proud to join this great club. Arsenal is one of the top clubs in the world and I’m really excited to be part of the team and take on this new challenge,” Rodriguez said. “I want to help us compete for trophies and make more history, together with our supporters.”
This is not a signing for depth. It is a signing to raise standards.
A fierce fight for the gloves
Rodriguez steps into a goalkeeping unit that never truly settled last season. Daphne van Domselaar and Anneke Borbe both battled injuries, disrupting rhythm and consistency in a side chasing titles on multiple fronts.
Now, all three will go head to head for the starting role.
Rodriguez brings big-game experience and the authority of a player who has already lived through the pressure of leading a club like Real Madrid. Van Domselaar offers commanding presence and shot-stopping pedigree. Borbe, when fit, has shown her own sharp reflexes and calm distribution.
For Renee Slegers, this is exactly the kind of problem a manager wants: three international-level goalkeepers, one shirt.
From Madrid captain to World Cup winner
Rodriguez’s time at Real Madrid charted the club’s rapid rise in the women’s game. She joined in 2019 and quickly became a cornerstone, playing more games than anyone else in the club’s short history and eventually earning the captaincy.
Her form at club level carried onto the international stage. Since her Spain debut in 2021, she has collected 34 caps and was part of the squad that lifted the 2023 Women’s World Cup. She started three matches at that tournament, contributing to Spain’s first global title before later losing the number one spot to Barcelona keeper Cata Coll.
That experience – the highs of a World Cup win, the challenge of fighting back for a starting place – now feeds into an Arsenal side that finished second in the Women’s Super League and reached the semi-finals of the Women’s Champions League last season. They were close. Now they are loading up to go one step further.
A ruthless window in north London
Arsenal’s summer has carried a clear message: standing still is not an option.
Georgia Stanway has arrived to drive the midfield. Ona Batlle brings power and intelligence down the flank. Selina Cerci, Geraldine Reuteler and Lisa Baum add depth and variety across the attacking and midfield lines.
Now comes Rodriguez, the player tasked with anchoring it all from the back.
This is no gentle refresh. It is a full-throttle push aimed squarely at the 2026-27 WSL title and another deep run in Europe. Arsenal already had the core of a contender. What they are building now looks like a squad designed to absorb injuries, rotate quality, and still keep the level high.
The question is no longer whether Arsenal have enough to challenge. With Misa Rodriguez joining an already aggressive recruitment drive, the question is who can stop them.
