Barcelona Faces Atletico Madrid in Champions League Showdown
Barcelona’s season goes on the line in Madrid on Tuesday night, and they will have to do it without the teenager who has come to symbolise their new era.
Pau Cubarsi, so assured all year, is banned after his red card in last week’s 2-0 first-leg defeat, a moment that flipped the tie and left Hansi Flick seething on the touchline. The 17-year-old still travels with the squad to the Metropolitano, but this time he watches, not plays, as Barcelona chase a Champions League quarter-final rescue act against Atletico Madrid.
Flick forced into a defensive reshuffle
Cubarsi’s dismissal – downgraded from yellow to red after VAR intervened on his last-man foul on Giuliano Simeone, before Julian Alvarez whipped in the opener from the free-kick – has forced Flick into a rethink at the back.
Ronald Araujo, the captain and defensive pillar, is expected to slide into central defence to partner Gerard Martin. That plan briefly looked in doubt when Martin limped off at half-time in the 4-1 demolition of Espanyol at Camp Nou, replaced by Marc Casado, but the club expect him to be fit to start in Madrid.
The full-back picture is clearer. Joan Garcia keeps his place in goal. Jules Kounde, rested at the weekend, should return at right-back, with Joao Cancelo back on the opposite flank after Alejandro Balde’s first start since injury served more as a gentle reintroduction than a statement to reclaim his spot.
Eric Garcia offers another option in the middle, though Flick has often used him in midfield. The coach has choices. What he doesn’t have is time.
Midfield riches, and a welcome return
If the back line has been disrupted, midfield looks suddenly rich again.
Pedri, who felt thigh discomfort and went off at half-time in the first leg against Atletico, came through 90 minutes on Saturday and is ready. Gavi, making his first club start in 11 months at the weekend, added bite and rhythm, and is now a real contender to start in Madrid. Frenkie de Jong is also back from a hamstring problem, giving Flick the kind of selection headache managers actually enjoy.
The likely structure? De Jong and Pedri as the base, with the option of Gavi or Fermin Lopez adding thrust between the lines, depending on how aggressive Flick wants to be from the first whistle. Trailing by two, he can’t afford caution for long.
Yamal untouchable as attack takes shape
Up front, one position is non-negotiable. Lamine Yamal starts.
The teenager lit up the weekend win over Espanyol, scoring after Ferran Torres’ early brace had already broken the game open. Marcus Rashford came off the bench to add a fourth, strengthening his claim for a central role in Madrid.
In the first leg, Flick went bold: Yamal, Rashford, Dani Olmo and Robert Lewandowski all started. Against Espanyol, he rotated heavily, with Fermin Lopez, Gavi and Torres forming the line behind Yamal. That reshuffle delivered goals and confidence – and a selection puzzle.
Torres’ double and Rashford’s sharp cameo tilt the argument their way. With Barcelona chasing the game, an attack-minded XI feels inevitable. A likely shape: Yamal from the right, Torres drifting in from the left, Rashford through the middle, with Lopez offering a link from midfield. Lewandowski and Olmo, though, remain powerful options if Flick leans on experience instead of pure energy.
Raphinha will not be involved, still sidelined with a hamstring injury, while Andreas Christensen also misses out. Youngster Marc Bernal is only expected to be fit enough for a brief appearance if needed.
Predicted Barcelona XI: J Garcia; Kounde, Araujo, Martin, Cancelo; De Jong, Pedri; Yamal, Lopez, Rashford; Torres
Doubts: Martin, Bernal
Injured: Raphinha, Christensen
Suspended: Cubarsi
Simeone weighs risk and reward with Oblak
On the other side, Diego Simeone has spent the build-up managing risk.
Jan Oblak, Atletico’s long-time No1, returned to training on Monday, as did midfielder Pablo Barrios. Neither is guaranteed to start. Juan Musso, the deputy, has held the shirt and was the only outfield regular not rested in Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at Sevilla, a match that underlined where Simeone’s priorities lie this week.
If Oblak is passed fully fit, he starts. If there is any doubt, Simeone will not hesitate to keep faith with Musso. The stakes are too high for sentiment.
At the back, Marc Pubill is suspended after the handball incident that so enraged Flick in the second half of the first leg, while David Hancko remains a doubt with the ankle problem that forced him off after half an hour at Camp Nou. That combination could open the door for former Barcelona defender Clement Lenglet to line up alongside Robin Le Normand at centre-back.
Predicted Atletico Madrid XI: Musso; Molina, Le Normand, Lenglet, Ruggeri; Simeone, Llorente, Koke, Lookman; Griezmann, Alvarez
Doubts: Oblak, Hancko, Gimenez, Barrios
Suspended: Pubill
Simeone made 10 changes at Sevilla, resting his entire outfield starting XI from the first leg. The message was clear: everything is about Tuesday night.
A tie on a knife-edge
Barcelona arrive needing goals, fuelled by a sense of injustice from the first leg and buoyed by a 4-1 derby win. Atletico hold the advantage, backed by the Metropolitano and a coach who has built his reputation on nights exactly like this.
Kick-off is at 8pm BST on Tuesday April 14, 2026, under the lights in Madrid.
One side will leave with a statement victory. The other will leave with questions that will echo through the rest of their season.
