Derby County's Young Guns Triumph Over Mansfield in Pre-Season Match

Derby County’s fringe and academy players made a persuasive case for themselves, stepping out of the shadows to claim a 3-1 pre-season win over Mansfield Town, powered by an assertive second-half surge.

With the bulk of the senior squad earmarked for Burton Albion duty tomorrow, this was very much the understudies’ stage. They didn’t waste it.

First Half

Derby struck first. Lars-Jorgen Salvesen peeled wide, sized up his options and whipped in a superb cross. Dajaune Brown read it early, darted into the right pocket of space and applied the finish, a tidy conversion that underlined why the club rates him so highly.

Mansfield, though, refused to play the supporting role.

Michael Smith, once on Derby’s radar, reminded the hosts exactly why. Released down the right, he slowed the moment, chopped the ball onto his left and bent a measured strike beyond the reach of Josh Vickers. The Derby goalkeeper flung himself full length, but Smith’s effort had just enough shape and just enough pace.

Vickers quickly atoned. David McGoldrick, still carrying that familiar menace between the lines, worked room on the edge of the area and let fly. Vickers reacted brilliantly, springing to his right to claw away a fierce drive that looked destined to tilt the contest Mansfield’s way before the interval.

Second Half

The game opened up after the break. Smith, hunting a second, rattled the crossbar from a corner, a warning that Derby’s young back line were still on a steep learning curve. At the other end, Owen Eames seized his moment, surging from central midfield and driving straight through Mansfield’s core. His pass freed Salvesen, whose effort was too close to Lewis, the chance begging for a more ruthless touch.

The tempo climbed, and with it, the jeopardy. McGoldrick again tested Vickers from distance, the keeper equal to another stinging effort as the match began to feel like a trial by fire for Derby’s stand-ins.

Then the quality told.

Charlie Smith picked up possession around 20 yards out, weighed up the scene and went for precision over power. His strike slid unerringly into the bottom corner, a clean, composed finish that shifted the balance back Derby’s way and gave the youngsters a lead they had earned with their growing authority.

You could feel there was more in it. Derby sensed it too.

Corey Blackett-Taylor drove at Mansfield with purpose, unsettling defenders and forcing them backwards. His work on the flank created the angle, and when the ball broke kindly, Cruz Allen stayed ice-cool. One touch to settle, then a measured finish past Harris to make it 3-1 and finally give Derby some breathing space.

A pre-season friendly, yes. But for Derby’s emerging crop, this was more than a run-out. It was a statement that, even with the senior names elsewhere, there is depth, hunger and no shortage of talent pushing hard beneath the surface.
