Hütter Supports Santos for Upcoming Cup Match Amid Goalkeeper Debate

Adi Hütter is standing by his goalkeeper. For now.

The returning Eintracht coach confirmed that Brazilian stopper Santos will start the upcoming cup tie, even after Frankfurt’s bruising 0-7 defeat in their final pre-season friendly at Brentford FC sent the long-running goalkeeping debate roaring back to life.

“The Brazilian will play,” Hütter said on Wednesday, making his short-term plan clear while leaving the bigger question wide open. On the possibility of signing a new keeper, the Austrian simply added: “Then we will see what else happens in future.”

That ambiguity will do little to quiet the noise. The heavy loss in London has sharpened scrutiny on the 23-year-old, with reports suggesting Hütter’s confidence in Santos has eroded. The club is already being linked with alternatives: Noah Atubolu of SC Freiburg and former Eintracht favourite Lukas Hradecky, currently at AS Monaco, are both being discussed as potential transfer options.

Hütter refused to be drawn into specifics about possible reinforcements, not only in goal but across the squad. The message was controlled, but the situation is anything but calm.

What is clear: the Brentford collapse has not been brushed aside. “Something like that is absolutely not on in that form,” Hütter admitted, revealing he had gone through the game in detail with his players. The session was described as a “clear analysis” and, in his words, a “warning shot.”

Captain's Role

At least one pillar of the side is set to stand firm. Captain and defensive organiser Robin Koch, who suffered a slight concussion in the Brentford match, is expected to feature in the cup. “I assume he will play,” Hütter said, underlining Koch’s importance at a moment when the back line and the man behind it are under intense scrutiny.

Santos gets the gloves for now. The real verdict on his future in Frankfurt may arrive far quicker than he would like.
