Manchester United Targets Defensive Midfielder: Five-Man Shortlist
Manchester United have already spent heavily to reshape the heart of their team. They are not finished yet.
Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos have arrived for a combined £85m, a clear statement that the club intends to rebuild the midfield around energy, technique and control. Behind the scenes, though, the focus is now on a different profile entirely: a pure defensive midfielder, someone to sit in front of the back four, break up play and flip defence into attack in a heartbeat.
Director of football Jason Wilcox is in no rush. With budget still available and two major midfield deals already banked, United are treating this third signing as a surgical move rather than a scramble. The brief is tight. The list is shorter than it looks.
Five names dominate that conversation: Aurelien Tchouameni, Alex Scott, Carlos Baleba, Manu Kone and Tyler Adams. Fulham’s Sander Berge has also entered the frame as a quieter, value-driven option.
Scott and Kone: the early frontrunners
Among the linked players, Alex Scott of Bournemouth and Roma’s Manu Kone are the ones who keep coming back to the top of the pile.
United tested Bournemouth’s resolve early. An enquiry for Scott, revealed on June 25, was swiftly rebuffed. Since then, the 22-year-old has turned down a new contract at the Vitality Stadium, and Chelsea have already seen a bid rejected. With two years left on his deal, the situation looks ripe for a sale on paper.
Bournemouth do not see it that way. TEAMtalk’s Graeme Bailey has reported growing confidence on the south coast that Scott will eventually sign fresh terms, with the Cherries intent on batting away offers throughout the window. United know they would have to pay a premium for a player they like but do not desperately need.
Ben Jacobs, speaking on The United Stand, reflected that balance clearly.
“Alex Scott is a high priority, but it’s just a high price,” he said, outlining the dilemma. Bournemouth, he confirmed, had already fielded a call from United before Chelsea came to the table.
So attention has started to drift towards Kone. The Roma midfielder fits the brief more cleanly: strong defensively, capable on the ball, used to high-pressure environments. Reports from multiple outlets claim United have reached an agreement in principle over personal terms with Kone, even if talks between the clubs have not yet begun.
Jacobs underlined that Kone sits “much higher on the list” for United and confirmed that Arsenal and Chelsea have looked at him as well, though no side has made serious headway so far. His World Cup involvement slowed the process. Now, with the tournament over, his situation is finally moving.
Sky Sports have backed up the notion that personal terms with Kone are in place, while stressing that another name cannot be pushed aside just yet.
Baleba: the one they “absolutely love”
Inside Old Trafford, Carlos Baleba has powerful supporters. If budget, availability and timing all aligned, United’s recruitment team would already have moved.
Bailey summed up the internal view in blunt terms.
“In an ideal world they’d just sign Carlos Baleba. They absolutely love his game,” he said, even while acknowledging the midfielder did not enjoy his best season last year. United’s staff, though, are convinced his profile and ceiling make him an outstanding fit for the role they are trying to fill.
Jacobs has also cautioned against ruling Baleba out. While Kone’s personal terms are reportedly agreed, the club is still weighing up which defensive anchor gives them the best blend of age, cost and impact. Baleba remains firmly in that discussion.
Tchouameni: top of the list, out of reach
On pure talent, Aurelien Tchouameni would sit right at the top of United’s wishlist. A world-class holding midfielder, already proven at the highest level, capable of dominating games with and without the ball.
There is one problem. He is not going anywhere.
Jacobs was blunt on that front. Tchouameni may be “right near the top of the list”, but that status is “1,000% irrelevant” if he stays at Real Madrid. And all indications point that way. As Jacobs reminded, the France international has already agreed a new deal with the European champions.
For United, that turns admiration into a dead end. The dream option is effectively off the market.
Adams, Berge and the value plays
While the headline names swirl, United are also exploring more pragmatic routes.
Tyler Adams, long admired by the club and first linked in detail when United were moving for Santos on July 3, sits lower down the shortlist but remains in contention. Jacobs confirmed the American is still “in their thinking”. His work rate, pressing and tactical discipline make him a natural fit as a squad option, even if he does not carry the same glamour as some of the other targets.
Then there is Sander Berge. United are taking what has been described as a “serious” look at the Fulham midfielder after his price tag became clearer. Berge offers Premier League experience, physical presence and a calmer passing style, potentially as a more affordable alternative if other deals become too complicated or too expensive.
Carlos Baleba, Sky insist, cannot be discounted either. Nor can Adams, whose name continues to circulate around Carrington.
A decisive call still to come
The shape of United’s midfield rebuild is clear. Tielemans and Santos bring craft and legs. The final piece must bring protection and balance.
Kone has momentum, Baleba has admirers, Scott has a price, Adams and Berge offer value, and Tchouameni is the unreachable ideal. Wilcox and his recruitment team now have to do what United have not always done well in recent years: choose the right player at the right time, not just the biggest name.
They want someone who can “really help them defensively”. They believe the answer is already on that five-man list.
The only question left is which one they are willing to back with the last big midfield cheque of the summer.
