Manchester United Prepares €40m Bid for Eduardo Conceição
Manchester United are ready to wade into one of the fiercest transfer battles of the summer, with a €40 million offer being prepared for Palmeiras sensation Eduardo Conceição.
The 16-year-old forward is being treated inside Brazil as the next big export. Outside Brazil, he has become a tug-of-war.
United, who spent more than £200 million on five signings last summer – Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, Senne Lammens and Diego Leon – are planning another rebuild of the first-team squad, targeting at least two midfielders, a new left-winger and a left-back.
Yet Old Trafford’s recruitment machine is also quietly working on the next generation. Ayden Heaven and Chidi Obi-Martin have already been plucked from other academies and fast-tracked towards first-team contention. Conceição is the latest name on that list – only this time, the fee belongs firmly in the senior market.
According to the Daily Mail, United are preparing an official bid worth €40m (£34m) in fixed payments for the Palmeiras youngster, with performance-related bonuses still being discussed. Palmeiras have made it clear: that is the level required to do business.
They can demand it.
The Brazilian club regard Conceição as one of the jewels of their academy, and the report describes him as “the hottest prospect in world football”. The market seems to agree. Manchester City and Barcelona are already in advanced talks over a deal, with both clubs pushing hard to secure his signature as early as possible.
Newcastle have already tested Palmeiras’ resolve. Their offer – €25m (£21.5m) plus €15m (£12.9m) in add-ons – has been rejected. The bar has been set at €40m in guaranteed money, and Europe’s elite now know the price of admission.
United’s pursuit is complicated by heavyweight competition. Paris Saint-Germain are monitoring developments, ready to move if negotiations open up. Barcelona, though, are viewed as holding a particularly strong hand thanks to the influence of sporting director Deco, whose pull with Brazilian talent remains considerable.
For United, this is about more than one teenager. It fits a broader shift under the new regime towards aggressive, early recruitment of elite prospects, even when the first team still needs major surgery.
Carrick’s uncertain role in summer rebuild
Hovering over all of this is a simple question: who will actually be in charge of United when the summer window opens?
Michael Carrick remains the favourite to land the job on a permanent basis after an impressive audition as interim head coach. His record – eight wins, two draws and two defeats from 12 matches – has pushed United up to third and put Champions League qualification firmly within reach.
Asked over the weekend about transfer plans, Carrick cut a measured figure, acknowledging the scale of decisions ahead without spelling out a blueprint.
“There’s kind of stages to go through in terms of the summer,” he said. “There are decisions to be made, of course there is, but then also timing’s a thing. Obviously, my situation’s one thing, so it’s just working through that.
“There are certainly conversations to be going on because it’s natural, but in terms of an official kind of, ‘this is what’s going to happen exactly’, that’s not something that I’ve committed to recruitment-wise. But we’ve certainly had conversations and that’s just natural. But I’m not really making a big thing of it, to be honest. I think that’ll happen in time anyway.”
United’s hierarchy cannot afford to wait too long. Deals at the top end of the market – even for 16-year-olds – move fast, and Conceição’s situation is already advanced with rival clubs.
If United do step up with that €40m bid, they will be sending a clear message: the rebuild is not just about the next season or the next manager. It is about locking in the kind of talent that could define the next decade at Old Trafford.
