Mason Greenwood's Future at Marseille in Jeopardy Amid Concerns
Mason Greenwood’s Marseille future is hanging by a thread, with the club now weighing up a summer sale despite his strong return in front of goal.
The former Manchester United forward has produced 15 goals and six assists in Ligue 1, but those numbers are being overshadowed by growing frustration behind the scenes. Coaches are said to be irritated by what they see as a lack of effort in training and on matchdays, with concerns peaking after a limp display in a 2-0 defeat to Lorient.
RMC Sport report that Greenwood appeared to “give up” during that loss, cutting a disconnected figure and showing little chemistry with his team-mates. That change in body language has not gone unnoticed. With his market value still high, senior figures at the club are now seriously considering placing him on the transfer list at the end of the season.
Coaching Response
New head coach Habib Beye, who replaced Roberto De Zerbi, has already reacted to what he views as crumbling discipline. Training sessions have been doubled as he tries to jolt a drifting squad back into line. Results tell their own story: Marseille have lost five of nine games since Beye took over, and the slide has exposed fault lines everywhere.
Sporting director Medhi Benatia has not held back. After a recent defeat he publicly tore into the players’ attitude, furious at what he deemed an unacceptable drop in commitment.
“When I see matches like this I have to come and talk,” he said, as quoted by the Daily Mail. “It’s scandalous, scandalous. What we ask for is some mentality, a minimum of pride. ... (Expletive), pride, respect for the jersey. We’ve had six or seven inexplicable performances this season.”
Team Dynamics
The glare is not fixed solely on Greenwood. Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg has been labelled “unrecognisable” in recent weeks, his influence evaporating just when Marseille need control and authority in midfield. Up front, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is described as “disgusted” by the perceived lack of effort from certain colleagues, a damning verdict from one of the dressing room’s most experienced voices.
Structural Issues
Above them all, club president Stephane Richard has identified a deeper structural problem. Constant churn. Too many arrivals, too many departures, never enough time for a team to grow.
“It’s incredibly difficult to get a team playing well when a third or half of the squad changes every year,” Richard said. “The first thing this club needs is a certain stability.”
Right now, stability feels a long way off. Marseille sit sixth in Ligue 1, their hopes of Champions League football fading fast. The financial and sporting consequences of missing out on Europe’s elite competition are already shaping the summer to come.
Reports from France suggest some players are not even clear on the club’s objectives for the season, a staggering accusation at this level and one that only strengthens the case for sweeping changes. A major overhaul looks almost unavoidable.
If that reset comes, it may well carry one of the biggest names out of the door. Greenwood, once signed as a symbol of ambition, could instead become the most high-profile casualty of a club forced to choose between talent and togetherness.
