Jose Mourinho Eyes Marc Cucurella as Left-Back Solution for Real Madrid

Jose Mourinho has not taken his seat in the Real Madrid dugout yet, but the work has already started. The Portuguese coach is combing through the squad, line by line, and one position keeps nagging at him: left-back.

According to journalist Ruben Canizares, Mourinho has zeroed in on Chelsea’s Marc Cucurella as a potential solution. The 25-year-old Spaniard, whose time in London has been stop-start and increasingly uncertain, is back on the market in all but name. Those around him believe the moment is right for a new challenge – and that Chelsea would listen for offers in the €45-50 million range. Anything substantially higher, they consider unrealistic.

Mourinho’s left-back dilemma

On paper, Real Madrid are not short of options on the left side of defence. They already have three players who can operate there, and last summer’s arrival of Alvaro Carreras was meant to close that chapter for a while.

Mourinho does not see it that way.

Reports indicate he is not fully convinced by Carreras as a long-term starter. The youngster remains in the squad picture, but the incoming coach wants a higher level of reliability and experience in a role he views as structurally vital. That is where Cucurella comes in: a high-energy, aggressive full-back, hardened by the Premier League and familiar with Spanish football’s demands.

From a tactical standpoint, the fit is easy to understand. From a squad-building perspective, it is complicated.

Madrid would have to clear space. Adding Cucurella without moving someone on would leave them overloaded on that flank, tying up both minutes and money in an area already well stocked. The question in the Bernabéu offices is simple: does upgrading at left-back justify a €45-50 million outlay when other parts of the squad are also under review?

Barcelona lurking in the background

Cucurella’s situation has not gone unnoticed elsewhere. His name has resurfaced at several major clubs, and Barcelona are again among those keeping tabs.

The Catalan side know the player well and like his profile, but their interest comes with a familiar caveat. Any move depends on internal exits and the ever-present constraints of their finances. For now, they watch and wait, aware that a bidding war at Premier League prices would likely push them to the limit.

Real Madrid, by contrast, can afford the fee. The issue is not whether they can pay it, but whether they should. Mourinho’s admiration for Cucurella is clear, yet the club’s hierarchy must weigh that against broader needs and the reality of already carrying three left-backs.

Cucurella, for his part, is ready. Ready to leave Chelsea. Ready for a new stage, a bigger role, a clearer plan.

Whether that next chapter is written at the Bernabéu, the Camp Nou, or somewhere else entirely will depend on one decision in Madrid: is a Mourinho-style left-back worth reshaping the squad – and the budget – for?
