Ona Batlle Set for Arsenal Move from Barcelona
Arsenal are closing in on a major summer coup, with Spain international Ona Batlle expected to join the club on a free transfer once her Barcelona contract expires, sources have told ESPN.
The 26-year-old’s deal with Barça runs out in June. Despite strong efforts from the Spanish champions to tie her down to fresh terms, Batlle has chosen a new route. It leads back to England, where she previously impressed during a spell with Manchester United.
For Barcelona, it stings. They know she is going and, according to sources, have already turned their attention to the market in search of a replacement for one of the most versatile full-backs in the women’s game.
Arsenal, though, are poised to benefit.
Arsenal land a top-tier full-back
Batlle arrives with pedigree. A regular for both Spain and Barça, she has made 31 appearances across all competitions this season and brings something coaches crave: genuine two-sided flexibility. She can operate at left-back or right-back without a dip in quality.
That profile fits neatly with Arsenal’s looming reshuffle in the wide defensive areas.
Katie McCabe is expected to leave when her own contract runs down this summer, opening up a significant gap on the left. On the opposite flank, there has been uncertainty around Emily Fox’s long-term future, but sources say she still has a year left on her deal and talks have already started over an extension.
Batlle’s arrival would give Jonas Eidevall the option to rotate, to flip flanks, to adjust mid-game without sacrificing balance. It is the sort of signing that can quietly change a season.
From La Masia to England and back again
Batlle’s story has already come full circle once. A product of Barça’s academy, she left early in her career to find senior minutes, building her reputation with Madrid CFF and Levante before making the jump to Manchester United. Her performances in England turned heads back home and, in 2023, Barcelona brought her back to Catalonia.
Since returning, she has stacked up silverware. Two straight Liga F titles are already in the bag, with a third expected to be confirmed within days. She has also lifted the Champions League with Barça, though last season brought a painful twist: defeat in the final against Arsenal.
That loss now adds a layer of intrigue to her impending move. The club that denied her European glory last year is about to become her new home.
Paths crossing again in Europe
The story might not end there. Both clubs are still on course for another collision on the biggest stage.
Barcelona face Bayern Munich in the Champions League semifinal. Arsenal take on French champions OL Lyonnes over two legs. If both navigate those tests, Oslo will host a rematch of last year’s final — only this time, Batlle’s future will already be painted in red and white.
For now, Barcelona are planning for life without her. Arsenal are planning around her. And one of the most complete full-backs in the game stands on the verge of a move that could reshape the balance of power at the top of the women’s game.
