Roma Pursues Said El Mala Amidst Complicated Transfer Saga
AS Roma have stepped firmly into the chase for Said El Mala, yet the 19-year-old’s future remains anything but straightforward.
The Giallorossi, searching for a new left winger, have added the Cologne talent to their shortlist and, according to Geissblog, are prepared to go as high as the Bundesliga club’s €50 million asking price. This is not a token interest. Roma have already been linked with Eintracht Frankfurt’s Jean-Matteo Bahoya at around €45 million, a clear indication the club are willing to commit serious money to reshape their attack.
Money, though, is only one side of this story.
El Mala not sold on Serie A – for now
While Roma test the waters, El Mala’s own plans point in a different direction. Sky reports that the seven-time Germany Under-21 international does not currently view Italy, or Serie A, as the next step in his career.
So Roma may be ready. The player, at least for the moment, is not.

With Dortmund out, the field inside the Bundesliga has thinned dramatically. Only RB Leipzig are still considered a realistic option for El Mala, but even that possibility is hanging by a financial thread.
Geissblog reports that Leipzig have informed Cologne they neither can nor want to meet the €50 million valuation at this stage. For now, the Saxony club are watching from the fringes, not leading the race.
The situation could flip quickly. A sale of Yan Diomande would inject the funds Leipzig need to come back with a serious offer. Until that happens, their interest remains theoretical, not decisive.
So the market looks like this: Roma willing to pay but not the player’s preferred destination, Dortmund frozen out after a bitter fallout, Leipzig waiting for a big outgoing transfer before they can truly join the fight.
While the rumours swirl, El Mala delivers
Amid all the noise, El Mala has offered the clearest answer he can: performances. On Thursday, in an 8-0 pre-season win over Bergisch Gladbach, the teenager scored his first goal of the current campaign, another reminder of why Europe’s clubs are circling.
Cologne know exactly what they have. A 19-year-old attacker already capped seven times at Under-21 level for Germany, valued at €50 million, showing form and composure while his name dominates transfer columns.
The question now is not whether Said El Mala is ready for the next step. It’s which club will have both the conviction and the means to match Cologne’s demands—and the project bold enough to change the player’s mind.
