William Saliba Injury Update: Expected Arsenal Return Timeline After Back Surgery

After securing the Premier League title last season, Arsenal aim to build on their success in the 2026/27 season. The club started strong by beating Manchester City 3-0 in the Community Shield, but injuries are a concern as they push forward.

One key figure sidelined is centre-back William Saliba, who was a cornerstone of Arsenal’s defense last season and is regarded as one of the top defenders worldwide.

Details About Saliba's Back Injury

Saliba aggravated a pre-existing back problem during the World Cup semifinal against Spain while representing France. Early in the match, he was seen receiving treatment on the pitch, visibly in pain, even uttering "my back is gone" to teammates.

Reports suggest he endured this injury through much of the latter half of the previous club season, pushing through discomfort in both the Premier League run and Champions League final.

The exact nature of the injury remains unclear, with possibilities including a fracture, slipped disc, or nerve damage, but no official diagnosis has been released.

"I've had some minor niggles for several months," Saliba said before worsening his condition at the World Cup. "I've been gritting my teeth because there was the Champions League and the Premier League. The World Cup comes around only once every four years, so you've got to grit your teeth. I'm not at 100%, but there are plenty of players who aren't at 100% either. You can't make excuses."

Projected Return Date

Currently, there is no confirmed date for Saliba's comeback as he recovers from his injury. Earlier reports in July suggested surgery might sideline him for up to five months, but since he chose to avoid surgery, a quicker return could be possible.

Manager Mikel Arteta has confirmed Saliba will be out at least until after the September international break, meaning October is the earliest expected return, though it could extend further.

How Arsenal Are Managing Without Saliba

So far, Arsenal have not signed a replacement to cover for Saliba’s absence. Instead, Arteta plans to rely on backup centre-backs Piero Hincapie and Cristhian Mosquera, both of whom gained valuable experience last season.

Mosquera started alongside Hincapie in the Community Shield win over Manchester City on August 16, likely holding the advantage for the right-side center-back spot, as Hincapie is more left-sided.
