Andreas Christensen Suffers Another Injury Setback
Andreas Christensen’s season has been hit by another brutal setback.
Barcelona confirmed on Sunday that the Danish centre-back has suffered a muscular injury to the rectus femoris in his left quadriceps, an issue that will sideline him for several weeks. The diagnosis came after medical tests carried out in the morning, less than 24 hours after he went down at the Sanchez Pizjuan.
The problem struck on Saturday against Sevilla. Christensen, who had again been trusted from the start after beginning the previous game against Racing, was having a solid night and even supplied the assist for Raphinha’s opening goal against the Andalusians.
Then, in the 58th minute, everything unraveled.
In a challenge with Ruben Vargas, Christensen immediately felt something go in his left leg. His reaction told the story before any scan could. He stopped, waved frantically for the medical staff, and knew there was no way he could continue.
He limped off, sat on the bench at the Pizjuan and broke down in tears. Not frustration over a bad performance. Not anger at a substitution. Just the raw disbelief of a player who has seen too many key moments ruined by his own body.
Barcelona’s medical report was blunt. The defender has a muscular injury in the rectus femoris of the left quadriceps and “will be absent during the coming weeks, with the development of his condition determining his readiness to return.” No exact timeline, only the familiar uncertainty of rehab and hope.
For Christensen, 30, this is not a one-off misfortune. Injuries have stalked his Barcelona career and chipped away at the version of the player the club thought it was getting. Physically, they have halted his rhythm. Mentally, they have become a constant weight, even after he committed his future to the club with a new contract last July running until 2028.
The numbers are stark. During the 2025-2026 season, a cruciate ligament tear kept him out of 32 matches for Barcelona and Denmark, with another three games missed due to leg muscle pain. The year before, 2024-2025, brought no respite: an Achilles tendon problem ruled him out of 37 matches, while further muscular discomfort cost him 16 more.
Every time he seems to string games together, something snaps the run.
At the Sanchez Pizjuan, he had just reminded everyone of his quality with that assist for Raphinha. Then came the collision with Vargas, the grimace, the signal to the bench, the slow walk off. Another promising night cut short, another stretch of the season now to be watched from the stands.
Barcelona must now adjust again without a defender who, when fit, offers calm, timing and experience at the heart of the back line. Christensen, meanwhile, faces a familiar question: how many more comebacks can he be asked to make?
