Andros Townsend's Unbelievable Encounter with a Pitch Roller
Andros Townsend has lived through enough in football to think he’d seen it all. Then a pitch roller ran over him in Thailand.
The 35-year-old winger, now with Thai League side PT Prachuap, was going through a routine half-time rondo when the unthinkable happened. A slow-moving roller trundled across the touchline and straight into him, sending team-mates into instant panic as he disappeared beneath the machine.
They grabbed their heads. Some turned away. For a split second, it looked like a career-ending horror show.
Somehow, it wasn’t.
Townsend emerged with nothing worse than bumps and bruises. No broken bones. No ligament tears. No stretcher. Just a stunned stadium and a viral clip that even his own family thought couldn’t be real.
Speaking on Piers Morgan's Football Uncensored, the former Tottenham and Everton forward admitted he still struggles to watch the footage.
“Every time I see it, I'm cringing, I'm in disbelief,” he said. “When I sent it to my kids, my kids thought it was AI. I had to explain to them for the next 10 minutes that it was real.
“It's horrible to watch back and to see what could have been, thankfully I was fortunate. I did manage to fall onto the floor at the right time, so nothing snapped as the roller went over me and I'm here today to laugh about it and to tell the story.”
For a player with a long injury history, those few seconds felt like a cruel rerun.
“I was thinking I was done,” he admitted. “It was up my ankle which I've had operated on. It was up my left knee which I've had operated on. I thought, either my left ankle's going to snap or my left knee's going to snap. I thought I was done. I was very fortunate that I was able to hobble away and recover within a few minutes.”
A freak accident waiting to happen
The warning signs were there. Townsend had actually clocked the machinery before the incident.
“At halftime we were going out to warm up and I've seen two rollers on the side of the pitch,” he said. “I remember thinking to myself, 'I've never seen that before in my career, what are they doing?' But we got called to warm-up. Didn't think anything of it.
“The next I saw him was when I was literally underneath him and thankfully no serious damage. A couple of bumps and bruises but managed to walk away unscathed, luckily.”
The winger’s fall – pure instinct, pure luck – saved him. He hit the turf at just the right moment, his body flattening under the roller instead of his joints taking the full force. While team-mates frantically waved for medical help and shouted for a stretcher, Townsend simply got back to his feet.
“They were very surprised that I continued the warm-up,” he said. “They were telling me to go to the doctor, they were calling for the stretcher. But I've been around the block, I've had my setbacks, I've had my injury issues – a roller's definitely not going to stop me from continuing, that's for sure.”
From under the roller to on the pitch
The drama didn’t end his night. Remarkably, after being run over by heavy machinery, Townsend still came off the bench later in the game. PT Prachuap went on to claim a comfortable 3-0 win over Pattani, with the veteran winger playing his part.
No scans. No boot. No sling. Just a few minutes to shake it off and back into the action.
Off the pitch, he has treated the incident with the kind of dark humour only footballers seem to master after a close call. The clip exploded online, and Townsend leaned into the madness. On Instagram, he shared the footage and poked fun at one of English football’s most notorious away days, joking: “It turns out Stoke away wasn't so bad after all.”
He has also made light of the driver’s role in the chaos, joking that he will not be pressing charges against the man behind the wheel of the roller.
For a player whose career has been shaped by injuries, the irony is stark. Surgeries on his ankle and knee couldn’t stop him. A pitch roller couldn’t either. The question now is simple: after you’ve literally been run over and played on, what exactly is left to scare you in this game?
