Andros Townsend's Unusual Encounter with a Pitch Roller in Thailand

The 35-year-old former England winger, now with PT Prachuap in Thai League 1, somehow ended up on the wrong end of a pitch roller before a match at Pattani on Saturday. Not a tackle. Not a late challenge. A pitch roller.

Townsend was going through his warm-up when a member of the ground staff appeared to lose control of the heavy machine. In a surreal few seconds, his left leg was briefly trapped under the vehicle as it rolled across the touchline area.

Remarkably, he escaped unhurt.

No stretcher. No lengthy delay. After the scare, Townsend was able to take his place on the bench and came on late in the game, as PT Prachuap cruised to a 3-0 win.

For a player who has seen most things in a career that’s taken in Tottenham, Crystal Palace, Newcastle and Luton, this was new territory. Yet he met it with the same dry humour that has coloured his social media in recent months.

Townsend took to Instagram after the match, joking that maybe those infamous away days at Stoke’s Bet365 Stadium “weren’t so bad after all” – a nod to a recent post where he had compared the sun-drenched Thai trips to the wind and rain of the Potteries.

He once worried about full-backs flying in on a slick Premier League surface. Now it is pitch rollers in Pattani. The setting has changed, the stakes feel different, but Townsend is still walking away from challenges – even the ones nobody could have seen coming.
