Ballinora's Championship Exit Confirmed After Appeal

Ballinora’s last bid to rescue their season has been shut down.

Their appeal to the Munster Council over the controversial awarding of their McCarthy Insurance Group PIFC Group 3 Round 3 tie to Fermoy was rejected on Monday night, ending any hope of a reprieve and confirming their exit from the championship.

Appeal over scoring error fails

The ruling upholds last Tuesday’s correction to the Glenville fixture, when the game was officially amended from a 0-21 to 2-15 draw to a 0-22 to 2-15 Fermoy win. That single extra point pushes Fermoy into the quarter-finals and leaves Ballinora on the outside, staring at what might have been.

The dispute centred on a scoring error in referee Wayne King’s report. Video footage later showed that a 30th‑minute point from Ben Twomey, quickly followed by a two‑point effort from the same player, had not been fully accounted for in the half-time score.

Instead of going in at 0-9, Fermoy should have been credited with 0-10 at the break.

Ballinora had led 2-7 to 0-9 at half-time on the day. The corrected tally didn’t change that interval advantage, but it did tilt the final outcome by a single, decisive point once the full-time numbers were recalculated.

Replay plea goes nowhere

Ballinora reacted strongly when the original correction was announced, expressing “huge disappointment” and arguing that “the rules of fair play” had not been applied. The club said it would “fully consider” its position, and it did.

They contacted Fermoy directly to seek a replay. Fermoy declined, opting to stand by the post‑match awarding of the game in their favour.

That left the Munster Council appeal as Ballinora’s last route. Monday night’s decision closed that door, confirming Fermoy’s progression and locking in the quarter-final line‑up: Fermoy will face Rockchapel, while Macroom take on Naomh Abán. Both ties are fixed for Sunday.

Double blow for Ballinora

The ruling caps a bruising spell for Ballinora. Their six‑in‑a‑row MJK Oils Muskerry JAHC push also came to an abrupt halt at the group stage, after a winner‑takes‑all defeat to Grenagh on Sunday.

Two campaigns, two exits, and no second chances. Where they go from here will define the next chapter for the club.
