Chelsea Pursues Andoni Iraola as Next Head Coach

Chelsea’s search for their next head coach has moved up a gear, with Andoni Iraola emerging as a leading candidate and initial contact already made with his camp, according to Football London.

The Spaniard has quickly become a central figure in the club’s long-term planning as the hierarchy look to reset after the brief and ill-fated spell of Liam Rosenior, who was dismissed last week after fewer than four months in charge.

Iraola in the frame – but focused on Bournemouth

For now, Calum McFarlane holds the reins as interim head coach, but the real work is happening behind the scenes. A five-strong team of sporting directors is driving the process, tasked with finding the right figurehead for BlueCo’s project and a clear tactical identity for the years ahead.

Iraola’s situation makes him particularly appealing. His contract with Bournemouth ends at the close of the season, removing a major obstacle for any move and giving Chelsea a clean shot at one of the Premier League’s most respected young coaches.

He is not playing along with the speculation, though. Asked directly about the Stamford Bridge job, the 43-year-old shut it down quickly.

“No, I think I said it when I announced I was not continuing here, for me, now, it’s about Bournemouth,” he said recently.

That stance has been consistent. Iraola stressed that he will not indulge in talk about his next step while still in charge at the Vitality Stadium.

“[This] past week, you were asking me about other clubs. I don’t know exactly which ones, but also, as a sign of respect for Bournemouth, I cannot talk right now about my future because it’s not what worries the Bournemouth supporters,” he added.

His focus has earned him credit. Under Iraola, Bournemouth claimed a ninth-place finish last season and have stayed competitive despite losing key players, a track record that has not gone unnoticed in west London.

Farioli rules himself out as Chelsea cast the net wide

Chelsea are not limiting themselves to one option. The sporting directors are sounding out a range of profiles to ensure they land the right fit for the squad and the club’s broader strategy. Names such as Cesc Fabregas and Marco Silva have already been floated in connection with the vacancy.

One name can be scrubbed from the shortlist. Francesco Farioli, who has put together an outstanding campaign with Porto and stands on the brink of a league title in Portugal, has made his position crystal clear.

Asked whether he would stay at Porto even if Chelsea came calling, the Italian did not hesitate. “Yeah, absolutely,” he told supporters, effectively closing the door on a move to the Premier League side.

That leaves Chelsea still weighing their options, but with Iraola firmly at the front of the queue.

Decision parked until season’s end

Despite the early groundwork and ongoing talks with Iraola’s representatives, Chelsea are in no rush to make a public announcement. The club intend to wait until the season is over before confirming their next permanent manager.

McFarlane’s steady hand has bought them that time. The interim boss has already delivered a key result, guiding Chelsea to the FA Cup final with a 1-0 win over Leeds United at Wembley, easing immediate pressure on the board.

For now, the process remains in the information-gathering stage: assessing interest, testing the waters with top-level candidates and measuring how each would mesh with a young, evolving squad.

Iraola’s rise at Bournemouth, his availability, and his refusal to be distracted by noise around his future have all strengthened his case. The question now is whether Chelsea turn that interest into a concrete offer once the final whistle blows on the current campaign.
