Chelsea Sign Marco Palestra: Big Money Transfer from Atalanta
Chelsea have moved decisively in the market again, with Italy international Marco Palestra undergoing his medical in London ahead of a big-money switch from Atalanta.
The right-back flew into the capital on Thursday, his camp now ironing out the final details of what is set to be a long-term deal at Stamford Bridge. Barring late drama, he will sign today.
Chelsea outmuscle Inter
This is a transfer that underlines Chelsea’s financial muscle. Inter were in the race and had put a salary worth around €2.5m per season on the table. Chelsea simply blew that away.
Palestra is set to earn €5m net per year, more than double Inter’s offer, on a contract running six years with an option for a seventh. For a 20-something full-back, that is a statement of trust and a serious commitment from the Premier League club.
Big fee, big bet
The numbers underline just how highly Atalanta rate him. Reports in Italy suggest the Bergamo club will receive €57m plus a further €3m in bonuses, while British transfer reporter Ben Jacobs has described the fee as “in excess of €50m.” The exact structure might be debated, but the scale is not: this is elite-bracket money for a modern full-back.
Atalanta have also protected their long-term interests. They retain a 10 per cent cut of any future sale, a clause that hints at their belief Palestra’s value could climb again if he develops in England as they expect.
For Chelsea, it is another heavy investment in youth and potential. For Atalanta, it is a record payday and a bet that the next time Palestra moves, they will cash in all over again.
