Christensen Faces Several Weeks Out for Barcelona

Barcelona have been dealt an early-season defensive setback, with Hansi Flick confirming that Andreas Christensen faces a spell on the sidelines after limping out of the win over Sevilla.

The Denmark international was withdrawn around the hour mark at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan, cutting a frustrated figure as he made his way to the bench. His reaction told its own story. Flick’s post-match update removed any remaining doubt.

“He'll be out for several weeks. It's a muscle injury. He'll have more tests tomorrow,” the Barça coach told reporters.

That diagnosis immediately rules Christensen out of Denmark’s upcoming Nations League fixtures over the international break, a significant loss for Kasper Hjulmand as well as for Barcelona. The centre-back will now stay in Spain to begin his recovery and await the results of further medical examinations.

For Barça, the timing is awkward. There is breathing space in the calendar while the national teams take over, but the fixtures waiting on the other side of the break leave Flick with little margin for error in defence.

Upcoming Fixtures

When La Liga resumes, Barcelona face a demanding run: Getafe, Real Betis and then Real Madrid. Wrapped around that domestic schedule sit heavyweight Champions League ties against Galatasaray and Paris Saint-Germain, games where Christensen’s calm on the ball and positional sense would normally be central to the plan.

He has time to make it back for at least part of that sequence, depending on how the muscle problem evolves. But “several weeks” in a season this compressed can feel like an eternity. For Flick, the challenge now is clear: patch up the back line and keep Barcelona steady just as the campaign begins to sharpen.
