Chelsea’s Cole Palmer Withdraws from England Squad Alongside Man Utd Duo Despite Tuchel's Warning
Chelsea star Cole Palmer is expected to pull out of the upcoming England squad, prioritizing his fitness over international matches. This comes despite a warning from manager Thomas Tuchel, who urged Palmer to prove his worth after being left out of the World Cup squad.
The Athletic reports that Palmer, 24, will skip the international break for load management reasons. He played the entire match in Chelsea’s 3-0 loss to Brentford but now focuses on preserving his physical condition.
Palmer is not alone in this decision. Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford and Kobbie Mainoo are also likely to withdraw due to injury concerns following their 1-1 draw against Fulham. Rashford continues to manage a persistent hip problem, having been substituted in the 77th minute, while 21-year-old Mainoo, who was part of the World Cup squad but did not play, has injury issues after 80 minutes at Craven Cottage.
Tuchel Demands Performance After Recall
Tuchel sent a clear message to Palmer, emphasizing that selection alone isn't enough; performance matters. Palmer’s last appearance for England was in March against Japan. The German coach said,
"It is one thing to be nominated, like with Cole, and getting your ticket back in the squad but it is another thing to perform for England. Cole needs to step up when he comes and show these kinds of numbers to keep his place and justify the nomination."
Tuchel acknowledged Palmer’s recent return to form, noting his four goals and two assists in seven games as justification for his call-up. He added,
"He has his numbers back, his assists back, decisive goals back. I think he has a point to prove, and the same goes for Trent [Alexander-Arnold]. He was never non-selectable for us. It is his chance to come to camp and be the best version of himself."
Alonso Supports Palmer’s Cautious Approach
Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso expressed support for Palmer’s decision to be cautious with his fitness. Alonso said,
"Sometimes you need to go through a difficult moment with an injury to learn from it. Cole had a tough period with injury, and now he’s working hard to prevent those symptoms from returning."
Injury-Stricken Season Prompts Load Management
Palmer’s hesitation to risk further injury comes after a challenging 2025-26 season marked by thigh and hamstring troubles. Though he made 34 appearances, starting 24 Premier League matches, and scored 11 goals with three assists, maintaining consistent fitness was difficult.
His current good form under Alonso is encouraging, but skipping England duty signals a plan to keep him fit long term. With only two goals in 14 senior international games, Palmer still has time to secure a regular spot in Tuchel’s England lineup.
Upcoming Nations League Challenges for England
England faces a tough Nations League schedule without Palmer, Rashford, and Mainoo. They will host Spain at Wembley on September 26, then travel to Prague to face the Czech Republic on September 29, followed by a game against Croatia on October 3. The window closes with a home match versus the Czech Republic at Wembley on October 6.
Tuchel must adapt his squad to handle this demanding fixture list and find alternatives to keep England competitive during this stretch.
- September 26: England vs Spain (Wembley)
- September 29: Czech Republic vs England (Prague)
- October 3: Croatia vs England
- October 6: England vs Czech Republic (Wembley)
