FC Groningen Dominates PEC Zwolle to Climb the Table
FC Groningen did not just win on Friday night. They imposed themselves.
At the Euroborg, Dick Lukkien’s side dismantled a fragile PEC Zwolle 3-0, a result that lifts Groningen up to sixth and drags PEC deeper into trouble in 16th place.
PEC arrived still nursing the scars of that brutal 0-7 defeat to Feyenoord. They spoke of a response. Groningen never allowed it.
From the opening whistle, the hosts pressed high, snapped into duels and forced PEC back towards their own box. The tempo was sharp, the intent obvious. The visitors looked nervous, short of confidence and even shorter of ideas.
The breakthrough felt inevitable. It came after 20 minutes.
Marco Rente split the PEC back line with a clever ball into Jorg Schreuders. The attacker showed composure, pausing just long enough to draw defenders before cutting the ball back to Thom van Bergen. One touch, then a calm finish. 1-0, and fully deserved.
Groningen smelled blood. The Euroborg sensed it too.
PEC tried to play out, tried to slow things down, but their mistakes kept feeding Groningen’s momentum. The pressure finally told again before the break, and Schreuders turned from provider to scorer.
Ryan Thomas lost the ball in a dangerous area and Schreuders pounced. He stepped onto it and, with his so-called weaker left foot, lashed a shot from outside the box. The strike flew in. 2-0, and PEC’s resistance looked broken.
The interval offered Zwolle a chance to reset. At least on the scoreboard, they kept the damage from getting worse for a while.
After the restart, PEC finally showed a hint of threat. A low cross from the left found Gabriël Reiziger stealing into the box. He stretched and made contact, but his touch sent the ball drifting just wide of the far post. A half-chance, but a reminder that Groningen could not completely switch off.
They didn’t. Groningen tightened up again, controlled possession and kept PEC at arm’s length, forcing the visitors to chase shadows rather than the game.
Then came the third, and with it, any remaining doubt disappeared.
On 68 minutes, Groningen earned an indirect free-kick in a promising position. It was clearly one from the training ground. A rehearsed routine, a sharp lay-off, and Tygo Land stepped in to hammer the ball into the top corner. A thunderous finish. 3-0, and the Euroborg erupted.
From there, Groningen played with confidence and a touch of swagger. Van Bergen almost added another to his tally late on. The ball dropped kindly to him in the penalty area, but this time his left-footed effort lacked the precision of his opener and flew off target.
It did not matter.
By the final whistle, Groningen had their statement win, a clean sheet, and a place in the top six. PEC Zwolle, still reeling from heavy back-to-back defeats, walk away with more questions than answers and a season that is suddenly staring down at them from the wrong end of the table.
