Gavi's Journey: From Injury to Redemption in Spain's National Team

Spain step back into national-team mode this week, World Cup winners turning their gaze to the UEFA Nations League with a heavy Barcelona flavour running through the squad. Confidence is sky-high. The medals are still fresh. But Luis de la Fuente’s mind went somewhere far darker when asked about the toughest spell of his reign.

He didn’t talk about pressure, tactics or criticism. He talked about Gavi.

De la Fuente’s darkest day

In an interview with COPE, the Spain coach was blunt about the moment that shook his dressing room more than any defeat.

“Gavi’s injury was a tough moment for everyone,” De la Fuente said. “We had a feeling of pain stemming from an accident, from losing a dear person to us.”

No coach chooses those words lightly. This wasn’t just a key player going down. It was the emotional core of a young, fearless Spain side suddenly ripped out.

De la Fuente then pulled back the curtain on the scenes that followed the knee injury that wrecked Gavi’s 2023.

“If you had seen the reaction from the players in the dressing room, it was horrifying,” he recalled. “Everyone was hugging and supporting him. It was incredibly moving.”

A squad that had been building momentum and identity suddenly found itself huddled around a stricken 20-year-old, dealing with something that felt far bigger than football.

Back on his feet, but fighting for minutes

Fast-forward to now and Gavi has done the hard, lonely work. Rehabilitation completed. Physically cleared. Back on the grass.

Yet the battle has only changed shape.

At Barcelona, under Hansi Flick, the midfielder is discovering that returning from injury is one thing; reclaiming your place in an elite, packed midfield is another fight entirely.

Competition is brutal. Pedri is locked in as a starter. The summer signing of Rodri has added another world-class presence in the centre. Fermin Lopez has seized his chances with sharp, energetic performances. Dani Olmo has brought form and versatility that coaches love.

Somebody has to sit. Right now, too often, it’s Gavi.

The player who once seemed undroppable for both club and country has been reduced to cameos, scraps of minutes that do little to restore rhythm or confidence. For a footballer who thrives on intensity and repetition, that kind of stop-start existence cuts deep.

A race against time and circumstance

Gavi’s story this season is not just about form. It’s about context. He is still managing the echoes of that major knee injury from 2023 and the knock-on setback that followed last season. His body has been through a lot; his game is built on maximum effort.

That makes regular football non-negotiable.

As the calendar tightens and the stakes rise, the 22-year-old faces an unforgiving equation: prove enough in limited minutes to earn more of them. Every appearance becomes an audition. Every touch, every duel, a reminder to Flick that he can still tilt games in Barcelona’s favour.

Camp Nou has never been a gentle environment for players trying to claw their way back. The standards are too high, the alternatives too strong. Yet this is exactly the stage where Gavi’s character has always burned brightest.

Spain still watching

For De la Fuente, the dilemma is clear. He knows what Gavi brings. He also knows international football is ruthless with players who lack rhythm.

Spain’s midfield is stacked, but at its best it has often carried Gavi’s bite, his aggression, his refusal to step back. To keep that role, he needs more than reputation. He needs sharpness.

So the mission is simple, and brutal: turn those scattered minutes at Barcelona into a platform. Build form, not just fitness. Force Flick to write his name back into the starting XI.

Do that, and Gavi doesn’t just revive his club career. He walks back into Spain not as a symbol of past pain, but as a central pillar of an “all-conquering” national team still hungry for more.

The injury once defined his story. The next few months will decide whether it remains the headline, or just the turning point.
