Cole Palmer’s England return has been cut short before it even began – and his misfortune has opened the door for Morgan Gibbs-White.
The Chelsea forward is set to withdraw from Thomas Tuchel’s squad with a minor injury, clearing the way for the Nottingham Forest playmaker to be recalled ahead of the upcoming Nations League fixtures, according to the BBC.
Palmer’s setback halts international momentum
Palmer had just gone 90 minutes in Chelsea’s 3-0 defeat at Brentford on Friday, another sign of how central he has become for the Blues after a summer of frustration.
Left out of England’s World Cup squad, he used the break to reset. The response has been emphatic: six starts in seven games this season, four goals, two assists, and a growing sense that he belongs at the heart of Tuchel’s attacking plans.
That is why this withdrawal bites. Tuchel had brought him back into the senior setup with a clear challenge attached. Before the injury, the England manager made no attempt to hide his expectations, saying Palmer had a “point to prove” and needed “to step up” to “keep his shirt and justify the nomination.”
Palmer has not played for England since a 1-0 friendly defeat to Japan in March. This was supposed to be his chance to reset that narrative. Instead, he is back in the treatment room, waiting again.
His fitness has been a recurring theme. A groin problem dogged him throughout the 2025-26 season, leaving former Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca – now in charge at Manchester City – openly baffled by how the issue dragged on. Now, just as Palmer’s club form had given his international career fresh life, another knock has stalled his progress.
Gibbs-White steps into the gap
The injury reshapes Tuchel’s plans and gives Gibbs-White the opportunity he has been waiting for.
Initially left out of the squad, the Forest midfielder was, Tuchel admitted on Friday, “incredibly close” to making the final cut. Palmer’s withdrawal has pushed him over that line.
Gibbs-White arrives in good domestic form. He has one goal and two assists in five league matches, knitting Forest’s attacks together and reminding observers why he has long been tipped for a bigger role on the international stage.
His last England appearance came in a 3-0 friendly win over Wales in October 2025. Since then, he has hovered on the fringes. Now he walks back through the door, not as a prospect, but as a player expected to contribute during a brutal run of fixtures.
Gruelling schedule awaits Tuchel’s England

England face four games in quick succession across an extended international break, a schedule that will stretch Tuchel’s squad and test its depth.
It starts at Wembley on Saturday, 26 September, with the visit of World Cup winners Spain – a marquee fixture under the arch and a sharp barometer of where England stand.
From there, the team head to the Czech Republic on 29 September, then continue the away swing with a trip to face Croatia on 3 October. The break concludes back at home, with the Czechs returning to Wembley on 6 October.
