Julian Alvarez Transfer Saga: Barcelona Faces Stiff Competition
Barcelona’s pursuit of Julian Alvarez has moved into an aggressive phase, but the Catalan club are being forced to stare down serious competition from Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain, who refuse to step aside in the race for the Argentine forward.
Alvarez wants Barcelona – but keeps his options sharp
Over Christmas, Alvarez and his camp made a firm decision: he would push for a move this summer. From there, they opened the door to talks with Europe’s elite, with sources indicating Barcelona quickly emerged as his preferred destination.
That preference has never really wavered. Throughout negotiations, Barca have been told they are his priority, and the other contenders have been repeatedly reminded of that stance.
Even so, PSG, Arsenal and Chelsea have not backed off. Chelsea’s absence from the Champions League could count against them, but they remain firmly in the conversation.
Agents and intermediaries close to Alvarez are now locked in advanced discussions with Barcelona. They have, however, laid down a clear condition: this will not become a drawn-out transfer saga. If Barca cannot move decisively, the player is ready to act.
And that’s not posturing. Those around Alvarez have stressed that leaving Spain is “not a hollow threat”. Talks with PSG, Arsenal and Chelsea are active, not symbolic.
Arsenal’s pitch: central role or nothing
Arsenal have gone a step further than most. They have told Alvarez directly that he would be used through the middle if he joins, a key detail in their pitch.
Initially, the Gunners viewed him as an option for the left side of their attack. Alvarez shut that down. He wants to play centrally, as a focal point, not as a wide forward. Arsenal have accepted that demand and stayed in the race, convinced he can be the striker to elevate their frontline.
PSG, with their own rebuild under way, can offer star billing in Paris. Chelsea, still reshaping their squad, can offer a leading role and long-term project. The decision, though, still circles back to Barcelona – if they can afford him.
Atletico’s stance: sell abroad, not to Barca
Atletico Madrid, preparing for the first leg of their Champions League semi-final against Arsenal, know exactly what is unfolding around their star.
Diego Simeone did not pretend otherwise when asked.
“I’m not inside Julian Alvarez’s head. But it’s normal that an extraordinary player like Julian Alvarez is wanted by Arsenal, Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona,” he said in his pre-match press conference.
Atletico’s opening valuation sits at around €120million (£102m / $140m) as a minimum. That figure immediately tests Barcelona’s limits. The Spanish champions are also working on a deal for Inter Milan defender Alessandro Bastoni and want Alvarez for under €100m, ideally with players included to soften the fee.
That structure does not appeal nearly as much in Madrid as a clean sale.
Arsenal, Chelsea and PSG are all prepared to put straight cash on the table. From Atletico’s point of view, that changes the picture. Selling outside Spain is far more attractive than strengthening Barcelona with a marquee forward.
They would rather see Alvarez in London or Paris than lining up against them at the Camp Nou.
Decision time for Alvarez
Atletico still hope to keep him. That would require a major shift from Alvarez himself over the next few weeks, a reversal of the decision taken at Christmas.
If that does not happen, the door swings open to a familiar destination. With Arsenal and Chelsea both pushing hard, there remains a very real chance the former Manchester City striker could be heading back to England – this time as one of the most coveted forwards on the market.
