Killian Phillips Joins Republic of Ireland Squad for UEFA Nations League
Killian Phillips has been handed a late chance to stake his claim with the Republic of Ireland after a bruising weekend left Heimir Hallgrimsson counting the cost.
The St Mirren midfielder has been drafted into the squad for the upcoming UEFA Nations League games following injuries to Jamie McGrath and Harvey Vale, both lost before they could even kick a ball for their clubs.
McGrath pulled up in the warm-up ahead of Hibernian’s clash with Aberdeen, while Vale suffered the same fate with Queens Park Rangers before their meeting with Preston North End. Hopes that either might recover in time for international duty faded quickly. Confirmation arrived on Monday morning: both would miss the window.
That opened the door for Phillips.
He is due to link up with the group in Dublin today, joining a camp that will be on the move almost immediately. Ireland head first to Pristina for Thursday’s Nations League tie against Kosovo, the start of a demanding, travel-heavy schedule.
From there, the Boys in Green head to Debrecen in Hungary to face Israel, before returning to Dublin for a home fixture against Austria at the Aviva Stadium. The window then closes with a second meeting with Israel, this time in Bačka Topola, Serbia – a four-game block that will test Hallgrimsson’s depth as much as his tactics.
Phillips joins a midfield unit featuring Finn Azaz, Conor Coventry, Jason Knight, Jayson Molumby and Bosun Lawal, and arrives with the chance to turn an emergency call into something more permanent.
