Liverpool Consider Alexis Mac Allister Swap for Eduardo Camavinga

Liverpool are increasingly open to cutting ties with Alexis Mac Allister this summer, with a dramatic swap involving Real Madrid’s Eduardo Camavinga being explored.

The Argentine, outstanding in Arne Slot’s title-winning first season, has slumped badly in 2025-26. The midfielder who once dictated Liverpool’s tempo now looks off the pace. His influence in possession has dipped, his duels are down, his tackles less convincing. Too often, Liverpool’s midfield has been overrun, and Mac Allister has been at the heart of that decline.

Inside Anfield, patience is thinning.

Talks over a new contract have hit a stalemate, and club figures now view the 27-year-old as a saleable asset. The timing is significant: both Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid are circling, and there is a growing sense that this might be the moment to cash in.

Previous indications from Liverpool suggested an £80m offer would be enough to trigger a sale. Now the picture is more complex – and potentially more intriguing.

Camavinga swap on the table

Intermediaries have been working on a high-profile exchange: Mac Allister to the Bernabeu, Camavinga to Anfield.

Camavinga has long been admired by Liverpool’s recruitment team. There is a realistic prospect that Madrid will sanction his departure at the end of the season, opening the door to a deal that would reshape both midfields in one move.

There is another twist. Mac Allister could be heading for a reunion with Jurgen Klopp.

Reports this week claim Klopp is already sketching out transfer plans in anticipation of taking charge at Real Madrid. Mac Allister is said to be one of five key signings he wants to lead a squad refresh, a clear sign of how highly the German still rates his former midfielder and his belief he can restore him to peak levels.

Klopp’s reported blueprint for Madrid does not stop there. He is understood to favour selling goalkeeper Andriy Lunin and moving for Freiburg’s Noah Atubolu, underlining how sweeping his changes could be.

Sources have confirmed that Madrid’s interest in Mac Allister is strong and that his arrival could form part of a double departure from Liverpool’s engine room.

Curtis Jones edging towards exit

Curtis Jones, another midfielder whose future has come under scrutiny, is now increasingly likely to leave his boyhood club in search of regular starts.

Aston Villa are in the frame, while Tottenham Hotspur are also tracking the 25-year-old. Spurs’ pursuit, though, is tied to their Premier League status; survival would be a prerequisite for any serious move.

If both Mac Allister and Jones depart, Liverpool’s midfield will look very different by the end of the window. The club already have a name at the top of their list.

Wharton lined up as midfield cornerstone

Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton has emerged as a prime target to help anchor Liverpool’s next midfield era.

Liverpool have accelerated their interest, carrying out extensive background work on a potential transfer. Palace are braced for offers, with Wharton likely to command around £70m – a fee that would represent a record sale for the London club.

Liverpool’s path to Wharton appears clearer after Manchester United cooled their pursuit. United scouts have monitored the 20-year-old closely but now see him as too similar in profile to Kobbie Mainoo. Their focus has shifted towards other midfield options such as Elliot Anderson, Aurelien Tchouameni and Carlos Baleba.

Liverpool, by contrast, see Wharton as a natural fit. Past negotiations with the player’s agent are thought to give the Anfield hierarchy a useful advantage, and sporting director Richard Hughes is pushing hard behind the scenes to get a deal in place.

Wider rebuild taking shape

Midfield is only one part of a broader overhaul. Liverpool are planning significant surgery in attack as well, with the club targeting two new forwards to cover the impending loss of Mohamed Salah and to ensure they can cope without Hugo Ekitike.

What started as a conversation about one underperforming midfielder now looks like the start of a full-scale reset. If Mac Allister trades Anfield red for Madrid white, and Camavinga makes the reverse journey, this summer could redefine Liverpool’s identity in the middle of the pitch – and perhaps the balance of power at the top of European football.
