Manchester United's Tactical Shift Ahead of Fulham Clash
Manchester United travel to Fulham without Benjamin Sesko, but Michael Carrick’s squad has not boarded the train to London empty-handed.
The striker was a notable absentee as United departed from Stockport on Saturday afternoon, his name missing from the travelling party for Sunday’s clash at Craven Cottage. His omission throws a serious question mark over his involvement and strips United of a focal point who has quickly become central to their attacking plans.
Carrick, though, has reasons to be encouraged. Carlos Baleba, Luke Shaw and Matthijs de Ligt all made the journey south, offering United a timely lift after a bruising week.
Triple boost for Carrick
United’s head coach had hinted there was a chance Shaw and Baleba could return in time for the weekend, and both are now in contention.
"There's kind of a chance with both of them. Don't know totally 100 per cent yet," Carrick said when asked about their fitness. "It's short-term [with Shaw], we're just working toward the game."
The tone was cautiously upbeat. Baleba has trained with the group this week, edging closer to a proper introduction after a stuttering start to life at the club.
"Well, I say back in, actually introducing him into the group," Carrick explained. "So he's done a bit of training this week and, hopefully, we'll get Luke [Shaw] back in and around it this week and look forward to a strong game on the weekend."
On Baleba specifically, Carrick painted the picture of a player straining at the leash.
"Yeah, he's desperate to get started. He's bouncing around the place. It's not always easy, I think, when you come into a new club and you're not right fully in with the group, with the training.
But he's dealt with that ever so well, I have to say. He's got great personality and he's full of enthusiasm around [the place] and pushing to get back as quickly as possible. So it's great to have him back."
Sesko doubt and tactical questions
Sesko’s likely absence is a blow. United need goals, they need presence, they need an outlet. Losing their main striker on the eve of a crucial league game is far from ideal.
Carrick has already shown he is prepared to go without a recognised centre-forward, though, using a striker-free system at times this season. If Sesko does miss out, that preference could resurface, with fluid movement across the front line and an emphasis on runners from deep rather than a traditional No 9.
The confirmed travelling squad underlines the options at Carrick’s disposal:
- Goalkeepers: Lammens, Darlow, Mee.
- Defenders: Maguire, De Ligt, Yoro, Shaw, Dorgu, Mazraoui, Heaven, Martinez, Dalot.
- Midfielders: Fernandes, Tielemans, Mount, Mainoo, Santos, Baleba.
- Attackers: Lacey, Rashford, Mbeumo, Zirkzee, Cunha.
It is a group built to control the ball and shift shape mid-game. Whether it can deliver the ruthlessness United have lacked in recent outings is another matter.
Response demanded after bruising week
United arrive in west London under pressure. Defeat in the Manchester derby has already stung. A Carabao Cup third-round exit to Brighton piled on more frustration and stripped away one potential route to silverware.
"We're looking good. Everyone's up and running," Carrick insisted. "Over the last week or so, pretty much everyone has played and [been] fit and we're trying to get Carlos back in."
He needs that optimism to translate into points. Fulham away is no place for another off-day, not with confidence already frayed and the season’s rhythm still not fully established.
The train has taken United to the capital. Now comes the real journey: can this patched-up, reshuffled side finally turn promise into a statement win?
