Marco Palestra Returns to Chelsea Training – Italy Spot in Jeopardy

Marco Palestra is finally back on the grass at Cobham, yet the timing of his return leaves a cloud over his Italy prospects for the upcoming Nations League fixtures.

The Chelsea wing-back, signed from Atalanta in the summer after a standout spell that also included time at Cagliari, resumed full training today for the first time in weeks. The London club committed around €60m including add-ons to bring in the 21-year-old, and he quickly justified the fee with sharp, dynamic displays in pre-season.

Then it all stalled.

Palestra picked up a knock in Chelsea’s final friendly before the campaign began and has not played a single competitive minute for the Blues. The club have kept the exact nature of the injury under wraps, declining to specify the area of the leg affected or the severity of the problem, only that it was serious enough to halt his momentum just as he looked ready to explode onto the Premier League stage.

Now comes the cautious restart.

Reports from the training ground suggest that while Palestra is back with the group, expectations for the weekend are deliberately modest. At best, he is being lined up for a second‑half cameo in Chelsea’s next Premier League outing, a controlled reintroduction rather than a full-blooded launch.

That careful approach has consequences beyond Stamford Bridge.

Roberto Mancini is preparing his Italy squad for the Nations League, and Palestra’s name had seemed a near-certainty a few weeks ago. He broke into the senior Azzurri setup in March 2026 and already has two caps, a rapid rise that mirrored his club trajectory. But he heads into this international window without a single competitive appearance this season.

For a national coach weighing form, fitness and rhythm, that matters.

Mancini must now decide whether to gamble on Palestra’s potential and pre-season form, or to leave him out until he proves his sharpness in Chelsea colours. The defender’s return to training is a step in the right direction, but with minutes still missing from his legs, his Nations League place hangs in the balance.

Chelsea, for their part, simply want their €60m investment fully fit and firing. Italy will soon find out whether that recovery has come just a little too late.
