Gary Neville's Transfer Blueprint for Manchester United

Gary Neville has called on Manchester United to rip into the transfer market this summer, urging the club to sign four key players and even consider “trading” Mason Mount if an upgrade becomes available.

His comments came after United’s wild 3-2 win over Liverpool at Old Trafford, a result that secured Champions League football for next season and virtually locked in third place in the Premier League.

Neville’s transfer blueprint

The scoreline flatters the chaos. Michael Carrick’s side tore into Liverpool early, Matheus Cunha striking first before Benjamin Sesko doubled the lead inside 15 minutes. At that point, it looked like a statement win, bordering on routine.

Then the game flipped.

Liverpool, dreadful in the first half, clawed their way back through Dominik Szoboszlai and Cody Gakpo. Old Trafford, buoyant and relaxed at 2-0, suddenly felt the weight of history: United had not thrown away a half-time lead to lose a home league game since 1984.

Kobbie Mainoo calmed the panic with a ruthless 77th-minute winner, rifling home to seal a 3-2 victory and restore the noise. The result was huge. The performance, less so.

Neville, speaking on his Sky Sports podcast, insisted Carrick will know that.

“Michael Carrick will be very happy tonight but I think he will also be disappointed deep down that they haven’t gone on to win that game 3-0 or 4-0,” Neville said. “They should have killed that game and put Liverpool to sleep because they were nowhere near this football match.”

The win, Neville stressed, cannot disguise the work still needed.

“He’s won the game and that’s the most important thing but Carrick won’t be fooled by some of what he saw in that second half. He will know he needs to rebuild the defence and midfield.”

Four signings – and a Mount dilemma

Neville set out a clear shopping list. If Carrick keeps the job, he believes United must reshape their spine.

“If you’re going to play 4-4-2, which I am massively in favour of United doing, you have to have two very special players in there and have defenders who can play one-on-one,” he said.

Then came the specifics.

“I think United need a left-back for next season because Luke Shaw has played every game this year and he may struggle. They need a centre-back, 100%, and they need two midfield players.

“They are the four priorities right now. They’re the players I would look at adding to this squad.”

Neville then turned to Mason Mount, whose £60m move from Chelsea in 2023 has yet to ignite.

“Look, if you could then maybe trade Mason Mount for someone else who maybe can play in and out and can be a bit more flexible across the midfield and forward line then I would say go for a fifth.

“But if you can’t, I would say those four areas are the priority and they’ve got to be top-notch, those players.”

The message was blunt: Mount stays only if United cannot find a more adaptable option for Carrick’s system.

Carrick’s future and the run-in

Carrick’s impact has been undeniable, steering United back into the Champions League and restoring a sense of control in big games, even when the scoreline suggests chaos. Whether that earns him the job permanently is still unresolved.

Asked about his long-term future after the Liverpool win, Carrick kept his focus narrow.

“It’s not about what I like or what I do not like. It’s not in my control,” he said. “Everything has gone so well, we know the situation and where we are. I am happy with where we are at the moment and we still want to get better.

“Let’s see what happens next. At this moment in time, it’s not something I am thinking about.”

United finish their league campaign against Sunderland, Nottingham Forest and Brighton. Champions League football is secured, the table is almost settled.

The real intrigue now lies off the pitch: will the club back Carrick with the defensive rebuild Neville demands, and will Mason Mount still be part of that picture when the window closes?
