Newcastle Nears €60m Signing of Freiburg's Johan Manzambi
Newcastle United are closing on a statement signing, with Sky Germany reporting that a €60m deal has been agreed with Freiburg for 20-year-old midfielder Johan Manzambi.
Only the final details with the player remain. Newcastle are understood to be tying up the last strands of a long-term contract that would bring one of Europe’s most eye-catching young midfielders to St James’ Park.
Aston Villa had tried to muscle in. Their need grew urgent after Amadou Onana suffered an ACL injury during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, pushing the Midlands club into the market for a powerful, progressive midfielder. They were firmly in the race, but the momentum swung towards Newcastle and has stayed there.
You can see why both clubs pushed so hard. Manzambi has been one of the breakout performers of the summer tournament, scoring three goals and supplying two assists. Before that, he had already turned heads in the Bundesliga with Freiburg, where he delivered five goals and four assists in 27 league appearances last season.
Those numbers are not window dressing. They underline a midfielder who drives games rather than simply managing them, a player who arrives in the box with conviction and still has the vision to create for others.
For now, though, he can only watch. Manzambi is currently sidelined for Switzerland, missing out just as the World Cup stages grow sharper. His teammates have marched into the quarter-finals after edging Colombia on penalties, setting up a high-stakes clash with Argentina.
If the transfer is completed as expected, Newcastle will be betting heavily that this brief pause in his progress is just that – a pause. At 20, with a €60m price tag and a World Cup already lighting up his reputation, Manzambi would arrive on Tyneside not as a prospect, but as a central pillar of what Newcastle believe they are building.
