Tuchel Faces Injury Crisis Ahead of Nations League Opener

Thomas Tuchel’s plans for England’s return to the Nations League top tier have been shredded before a ball is kicked, with a spine of his squad wiped out by injury and fatigue.

Cole Palmer, Declan Rice, Kobbie Mainoo, Marcus Rashford and Tino Livramento have all withdrawn, forcing the head coach into a rapid reshuffle ahead of Saturday’s opener against Spain at Wembley. James Garner and Morgan Gibbs‑White have been drafted in to plug the gaps.

Palmer’s comeback put on ice

Tuchel had made a point of restoring Palmer to the fold on Friday, a headline recall to launch the new two‑year international cycle that will culminate in Euro 2028. It was meant to be a reset: England back in the Nations League’s top division, a glamour start against Spain at Wembley, then tricky trips to the Czech Republic and Croatia before a home rematch with the Czechs.

Instead, Palmer is out again. A minor muscle problem has forced the Chelsea midfielder to withdraw, cutting short what Tuchel had framed as a fresh chance after a stop‑start international career.

Palmer has been one of the Premier League’s standout performers in the early weeks, almost ever-present for Chelsea with four goals and two assists in all competitions. Yet he has only three England appearances under Tuchel and missed the World Cup after his form dipped late last season. This window was supposed to be his way back in. Now he waits.

Rice rests after relentless workload

Rice’s absence carries less surprise but just as much significance. The Arsenal midfielder has been running hot for club and country for years and has been managing a nerve issue in his hamstring, which flared in the latter part of last season and affected his lower back. It bothered him during the World Cup as well.

He has started every Premier League game for Arsenal this season and their Champions League opener against Napoli. At this stage, Tuchel and the medical staff have agreed that stepping away from this camp is the smartest option, a preventative move rather than a reaction to a fresh tear or strain.

Garner now steps in to help cover the central midfield void left by both Rice and Mainoo.

Mainoo blow after Fulham flashpoint

Mainoo’s withdrawal adds another layer of frustration. The Manchester United midfielder came off after 80 minutes in Sunday’s game at Fulham, a substitution that drew loud boos from the away end and put Michael Carrick in the firing line.

Mainoo went to the World Cup but was the only outfield player not to see a single minute. Tuchel has been at pains to stress that the omission was not about trust or talent, but about tactical calls he made in the heat of the tournament. He had publicly promised to give the youngster minutes over this international block.

That plan has gone. Mainoo is out, and with him another chance for Tuchel to rebalance the narrative around his role in the squad.

Rashford setback deepens attacking concerns

Rashford’s situation feels familiar, and that is part of the concern. The forward was taken off in the 77th minute at Craven Cottage and was seen clutching the front of his hip as he made his way off the pitch.

Tuchel has been one of Rashford’s firmest backers at international level. He called him up in his very first squad in March last year, at a time when the United attacker was badly out of form, and has picked him whenever he has been fit.

But the relationship has not been straightforward. Rashford struggled badly in England’s last‑32 tie against the Democratic Republic of the Congo at the World Cup. From that point, Tuchel largely turned away from him, using him only for a couple of stoppage‑time minutes in the semi‑final defeat by Argentina before handing him the first half of the third‑place play‑off against France.

Now, with a new campaign to shape and a front line already under scrutiny, Rashford is sidelined again.

Livramento’s luckless England run continues

Livramento’s England story remains one of what‑ifs. The Newcastle full‑back made the World Cup squad only to suffer a calf injury in training on the eve of the tournament. He flew home, had surgery and has been fighting his way back ever since.

He finally returned for Newcastle as a substitute against Bournemouth earlier this month, only to suffer a setback in training before their win over Hull on Saturday. He missed that game, has yet to start for his club this season, and now misses another England window.

New faces, new balance

Tuchel has turned to Garner and Gibbs‑White to steady the picture. Garner arrives as a straight central midfield reinforcement, tasked with helping to fill the space left by Rice’s leadership and Mainoo’s energy.

Gibbs‑White adds craft and movement in the No 10 role, where Tuchel is suddenly juggling options. With Palmer out, the creative load will fall across Gibbs‑White, Jude Bellingham, Morgan Rogers and Eberechi Eze.

Spain at Wembley, then the Czech Republic and Croatia away, will test that reshaped core quickly. Tuchel wanted this camp to mark the start of a new cycle. Instead, it already feels like a test of how deep his England really run.
