Federico Valverde Injury Update: Focus on AS Roma, Not Villarreal
Real Madrid captain Federico Valverde is facing a race against time to be fit, but the club already has a clear idea: Rome, not Villarreal, is the real target.
The Uruguayan midfielder suffered a grade 3 ankle sprain after a heavy challenge from Atletico Madrid’s Kang-in Lee in the derby at the weekend, an injury Real Madrid confirmed in an official statement earlier today. The tackle left Valverde in clear discomfort and has now forced him to the sidelines at a key point in the season.
Early whispers from within the club suggested some optimism. The expectation was that Valverde might only miss a couple of weeks and could be back soon after the international break, just in time for the La Liga clash with Villarreal at the Santiago Bernabeu.
That scenario now looks far less likely.
Villarreal in doubt, Rome in sight
According to journalist Alberto Pereiro, those inside the club see a return against Villarreal on October 10 as extremely improbable. The risk is too high, the margin too tight.
Instead, the internal plan is clear: get the captain fully fit for the next game on the calendar – the UEFA Champions League trip to face AS Roma on October 14. Real Madrid host Villarreal first, then fly to Italy four days later. If everything goes according to the current roadmap, Valverde will be on that plane to Rome, not rushing back for the league meeting with the Yellow Submarine.
For Jose Mourinho, that matters.
Mourinho’s midfield pillar
Valverde arrived into this season under a cloud of doubt. His future and his role were openly questioned after an underwhelming previous campaign, one that ended on a sour note with a brawl involving teammate Aurelien Tchouameni.
Mourinho has changed the script.
Since the Portuguese coach took charge, the 28-year-old has become a non-negotiable starter. Valverde has begun all eight of Real Madrid’s matches across all competitions this season, contributing a goal and an assist and, more importantly, giving the side energy, aggression, and structure in the middle of the pitch.
He has been the constant in the double pivot. Around him, Mourinho has shuffled the deck: Bernardo Silva, Tchouameni, Eduardo Camavinga – all have been tested alongside the captain. None of those combinations has yet delivered the ideal blend of control and creativity that Real Madrid crave in central areas.
That is why this injury stings. Not just because of the games he might miss, but because Mourinho is still searching for his best midfield partnership. Valverde is the reference point in that puzzle.
Real Madrid can afford to be cautious for Villarreal. Can they afford to go to Rome without their captain?
