Wales Faces Portugal in Nations League A Opener

Wales head to Lisbon on Thursday, 24 September, walking straight into the fire for their opening Nations League A fixture against Portugal.

It is a brutal way for Craig Bellamy to begin. Cristiano Ronaldo and a stacked Portugal squad on their own turf, with Wales already patched up before a ball is kicked.

Harry Wilson is out. Nathan Broadhead is out. Karl Darlow is out. All three have withdrawn through injury, stripping experience and attacking craft from Bellamy’s options and narrowing his room for manoeuvre.

There is another setback. Highly rated young defender Dylan Lawlor is also missing, a blow to the depth and balance of the back line at a time when Wales will expect long spells without the ball.

There is, at least, one reassuring sight. Captain Ben Davies is available again, bringing leadership, calm and a wealth of top-level experience to a defence that will have to live on its nerve against Portugal’s movement and power.

Up front, the picture looks different. Uncapped forwards Cian Ashford and Joe Taylor are in the frame, raw but intriguing options who offer energy and direct running. Bellamy must decide whether this is the night to trust fresh legs on a daunting stage or lean on familiarity and caution.

So the dilemma sharpens. How bold do you go in Lisbon? Do you pack the midfield and try to suffocate space around Ronaldo and his supporting cast, or gamble on pace in wide areas and try to hurt Portugal on the break?

If the decision were yours, what would it look like? Which formation gives Wales the best chance to bloody a heavyweight nose? Who makes your starting XI to take on Ronaldo and company under the Lisbon lights—and who sits this one out?
