Wales Faces Triple Setback with Wilson, Broadhead, Darlow Withdrawals

Craig Bellamy’s Nations League plans have been ripped up before a ball is kicked.

Wales will head into League A without Harry Wilson, Nathan Broadhead and first-choice goalkeeper Karl Darlow, all three withdrawing from the squad in the build-up to Thursday’s opener.

Wilson, Leeds’ creative spark and Wales’ standout attacking influence in recent years, had been a major doubt with a quad problem and has now been ruled out. Broadhead, the Wrexham forward, also misses the campaign after suffering a thigh issue.

The third blow stings just as much. Darlow, who finally made his Manchester United debut in the EFL Cup last week and was on the bench for their Premier League draw with Fulham on Sunday, has also pulled out of the squad.

Bellamy has turned to experience and fresh blood to plug the gaps.

Veteran Leicester City goalkeeper David Cornell is called up and in line for his first cap, with Huddersfield Town forward Joe Taylor also drafted in at international level for the first time. Reading midfielder Charlie Savage joins them as another uncapped replacement, adding energy and a left-footed option in the middle of the pitch.

The schedule offers no easing-in period.

Nations League A Campaign

Wales open their Nations League A campaign against Portugal in Lisbon on Thursday, a daunting start in one of European football’s toughest arenas. They then travel to Copenhagen to face Denmark next Sunday, another side well used to the demands of top-tier international football.

After that, the focus turns home. Norway visit Cardiff on Thursday, 1 October, before Denmark make the return trip to the Welsh capital three days later, completing a bruising early block of fixtures.

Injuries have stripped Bellamy of key weapons before the journey has even begun. The question now is whether this reshaped, untested group can survive – and perhaps even thrive – against Europe’s elite.
